New makita 5041 ROS crackling sound- normal or defective?

I got a new Makita Bo5041 ROS today as a birthday gift and of course i appreciate it but man does it sound annoying! its making a pretty loud crackling sound, i think at all speeds but very noticeable at the lower speeds, loud enough that i'm wondering if its defective or not! This one was...

    Makita BO5041 or DWE6423 ROS ?

Evening gents, Its looking like im going to have to take a few steps back in my sanding game due to unfortunate circumstances- My 9401 belt sander and Rotex, along with some other less expensive bits, that where lent to my brother to finish his vans interior where stolen from said van a few...

Why is festool so much more expensive here ?

Anyone have any knowledge on why we pay so much more than the US ? My best guess would be "America bigger, profit higher" but im curious. Looking around it seems like we tend to pay about £150 more on any given item over here! which seems a little crazy. Specifically ive been looking at...

Moving to Brazil: selling up or using a portable power station?

Figured it worth noting here that the Wadkin Tradesmen stuff had the factory(s) in Brazil and while they are certainly a lower quality than the Bursgreen we know, they are decent enough and likely very cheap over there on the used market

P/T machines. Is bigger always better ?

I hadn't considered them having two motors, i guess that is one advantage of the DW (thought if it wasn't on the side it would be nice!) so i might shelf that right now and keep looking. I do like the sound of the Sedgewick's more and more- smaller form factor and no faffing around with lifting...

P/T machines. Is bigger always better ?

Thanks for all the advice, i think i'm going to put money aside for at the least a wadkin boas if not separate machines and if i see them come up local and cheap ill pounce (im a tight arse, i think i waited and got the 352 for £250) so it might be a while and ill hold onto the current set up in...

P/T machines. Is bigger always better ?

A bigger shop is the dream but for me its all hobby and for-fun work so im not sure it'll happen unless i get extremely blessed with a better rental (it wont happen) so i'm definitely ok with a combo p/t. One thing i wonder about the older ones is how they are for switching between. Is it a...

P/T machines. Is bigger always better ?

Im hoping i can get some advice from people that have used the big and the small, the combined and individual machines, etc but I've been looking at used thicknesser/planers online quite a lot recently and im curious how much prices are dictated by quality and how much is usability for the...

How would you repurpose a dead startrite flash welding unit?

As per the title. I was given a flash welding unit from a large startrite bandsaw that an unknowing apprentice pulled apart "to make a key storage box" many years ago 🤔 At least the sheer, clamps and all the switches are intact.. Currently im thinking i put the VFD inside it and use the...

    Anybody able to cast aluminium?

If its just 40mm, personally, i'd get some 12mm mild steel, spend £20 on a tungsten carbide 40mm core bit. Drill the hole on a pillar drill, line it up on the machine to mark the screw holes and drill and tap them.. would cost £30 at most if you dont have the bit or the tap. Can't harm to try...

Close call and a lucky escape....

Glad you are safe and sounds, definitely a little luck on your side! I had a fire related close-call a few years back at the forge and it was scary.. You can get small auto-detonating fire extinguisher spheres; maybe worth seeing if it would be suitable to attach one to the inside of the drums...

    Startrite 352 bandsaw key required

Interested to find out if they are all the same or not, i would imagine they are a common cut as they are for saftey not security. I would also like to get one cut if they are universal

    Wanted Meddings Hs4 Hacksaw

AS per the title, im looking for a HS4" hacksaw within or very close to Dorset. Im able to collect within that distance. As long as it works ok and its all there condition and surface rust etc isn't an issue as its for a resto project. Going off older sold listings and the fully restored one...

Any idea what this is/was for?

£20 ? Lucky man; I'd go grab those smaller ones and chuck them on ebay if it where me. Its been answered but to chime in they make great welding surfaces too

Your worst accident or near miss

Take a look online for phantom limb mirror therapy mate, i cant say anything from experience but studies have shown good results. It uses a little box with no lid and a mirror in the middle. I believe it works because when you see the limb or appendage in the mirror, your brain assumes its the...

Your worst accident or near miss

About a year ago i lit the small propane forge and this one time i just didn't think to check and tighten the hose clamp nuts. A few minutes go by no problem, the metals hot, i step out the shed door to the anvil and hear a whoosh sound- turn around and see that a nut had come loose, propane was...
