    new lathe

    Hi John, I have the Jet 1642 and it is a very good lathe. The only drawback is the size of bowl that it can turn. In theory it can turn a reasonable size as the headstock turns at 90 degrees to the lathe bed, but the stability of the bed, and vibration/noise make turning something too big...

    I Have heard of people spalting in a barrel using horse manure, "Beer" and leaves with leaf mould on. Apparently this creates the correct conditions for spating to occur quickly. The important ingredient I believe is the leaf mould.

    Hi Paul, Thanks for the welcome. Glad you are going to give pen turning a try. Strange because I would love to try some furniture making. Having admired Sam Maloof chairs etc for sometime I would love to try. Maybe someday!!! :D

    Hi Dean, As a pen turner myself, going below 12mm square is cutting it fine for size. Different widths can make different pen types. 12mm + for Slimlines. But for the fountain pens, rolllerballs, cigars etc, you need 20mm square. The reason is the size of the brass tube that is put...
