Wood burning stoves tested to destruction

Interesting and slow start up may be key. But had the beast for maybe 20years and never needed to replace anything at all. I used to like damping it down at bedtime and felt like I'd secured a victory when it restarted in the morning on just opening the "vent". And was still warm. Now more...

Wood burning stoves tested to destruction

We have a cast iron Jotul woodburner that we have had for years. Chosen entirely on looks by my wife and does a good job. Can get as hot as hell and have you pinned against the far wall trying to keep cool. What troubles me is that as yet, I've seen no detrimental signs of this much mentioned...

Health Secretary:"People who are abusing NHS staff can be turned away, and should be turned away, if that is the way that they are treating our staff"

Brought back memories of one patient I saw as a Casualty Officer some 50years ago. Ambulance man came in and asked me to come out to the ambulance and see an unruly man who was fighting the crew and using non stop foul language. "We almost left him where we found him Doc, as he was so...

    Hollow mortice chisels

I was surprised at how little, if any, a gap worked well. I'm guessing that sharpening/polishing significantly reduced any audible metal to metal contact. I had never before thought about the size of the chips significantly affecting performance but it now makes sense to me.

    Hollow mortice chisels

Well that stimulated me to have yet another go at it. Sharpened chisel and augur, polished inside of chisel too. And still marked resistance to getting into hardwood with some burning too. After much thought it occured to me that the burning and resistance may be because the augur was set to...

    Hollow mortice chisels

I've had a Sedgwick chisel mortiser for more than 40 years with English and Japanese pattern chisels. Sharpened or otherwise I have never managed to cut mortises as do those on Youtube who seem to be able to obtain wood akin to butter in consistency. I guess it should not be surprised at the...

Can't find the water valve in the street. Any ideas?

Similar episode in Leeds. Lady had a meter installed and subsequently complained about the ludicrously high bills she was getting. Turned out she was at the start of a run of pipework feeding hers and her neighbours houses.

    First seeds of 2024

I like the idea of using cardboard boxes, lined with a reflective surface. Is this the product of your genius or can you recommend links to early growing under lights for penny-pinching Northerners? ;)

Just to stir the pot, has anyone noticed...

Robert Colville in today's Sunday Times gives a plausible account of the relationships between the effectiveness and costs of Govt actions and outcomes that has relevance to much of the discussion above. Sadly, it seems that spending more money on a shambles, whether paid for by the filthy rich...

    Breaking News: Post Office Scandal

This sorry business is now all over the news but those of us who take Private Eye have been reading about this for years. I've seen next to no credit given to my favorite news outlet. I'm guessing the same sort of thing will happen if and when concerns hit the headlines over Freeport development...

    Dehumidifiers

On the subject of dehumidifiers, one of my ancient models that I ran on a time switch at the overnight cheap electricity rate packed up and I have been unable to source a new one that is not full of microelectronics that do not like being switched on and off via an external timeswitch. With my...

    Log/Briquette Maker - which one's work?

References to flashback are relevent but you can achieve a similar alarming event - "flash-up" - if you load up a hot bed with sawdust and shavings and the volatile gases do not immediately ignite or go out after shutting the fire doors. The build up of gas in the fire and chimney eventually...

    A smoking ban?

Not sure how the NHS savings figured are calculated but older folk cost the NHS more per head than do the young. The cheapest option for the NHS as well as Govt pension costs is for us all to pop off the day before we reach pensionable age.

    Woodwork eye protection safety glasses

Thanks for the responses but I see no answer to my question which was “the F (low energy impact rating - small object impacts at up to 45m/sec) or B (medium energy impact rating - small object impacts at up to 120m/sec), which should one choose?” I see references to comfort and so many...

    Woodwork eye protection safety glasses

Looking to renew my safety glasses and bemused by complexity of classification and price ranges. But to pick on one quality, the F (low energy impact rating - small object impacts at up to 45m/sec) or B (medium energy impact rating - small object impacts at up to 120m/sec), which should one...

    Outdoor caulk/putty/silicone

Google “can you overpaint Sikaflex EBT+” and here a few quotes from the top search results. No, Sika Flex Sealant is not paintable and does not adhere to common quality latex paints Non-corrosive and can be painted over with most water based paints then finished with oil or rubber based paints...

    Woodworm!

They look like caterpillar caccoons. They typically appear on wood in bunches and "crisply" attached to matching indentations in the wood. Your first two pics show it well. Scrape off and all will be as new - apart from the residual surface indentations. Phil

    Festool Kapex Recall

Update on my Festool Kapex experience. 10 weeks after the return of my retrofitted machine, a letter of apology for the poor service arrived together with a new sawblade as compensation. I would not be at all surprised to learn that Festool and Test and Trace have been run by the same...
