    When book matching goes wrong...

It went weird, you should be able to see them now. Not sure what happened there...

    When book matching goes wrong...

I've finished it now. I had to join the shelves together with veneer pins and the heads are more visible than I would like but I'm really pleased with it. Made from a single piece of Yew; shelves got a bit thinner than I would have liked as I ran out of material. They're 4-5.5mm thick whereas I...

    Wood choice and advice

Honest answer is how long is a piece of string... It has more to do with how much moisture is in the wood when it is dimensioned by the mill than its dimensions, and also how it has been cut. Quite often the more "builders merchant" timber is not dried sufficiently before it is sawn, it then...

    Wood choice and advice

By laminating I'm assuming you mean edge jointing? Yes this is fine, but you need to make sure the wood is definitely fully dry before you start, or it will warp. If you're buying from Wicks/B&Q/etc. you're probably not buying fully dried wood and I would suggest leaving in your shed, etc. for...

    When book matching goes wrong...

I know it goes against the trope but I do actually like my MIL, and she does as well (I think....) 😂 Hopefully won't have to take up Paul's offer of a seat at his Christmas day lunch though... 😳 Will definitely be using that, thanks! 👍

    When book matching goes wrong...

In all seriousness I can't unsee that now and you may have just saved me here. MIL is a serious wildlife/bird fanatic and that might just do it... ...if you can ignore the big black pair of points 2/3rds if the way up 😂😂😂

    When book matching goes wrong...

Hi all, Figured there are people out there who could do with a laugh this morning... So I've picked up a beautiful piece of yew to make a thimble display shelf for the Mother In Law's Christmas present, and the plan was to band saw it and bookmatch to make a wide enough panel. All looked...

Are we being ripped off by tool retailers?

Absolutely, and it's not just woodworking, etc. I also do homebrew and you cannot buy locally if you want to (especially now Wilkos has gone); literally everything has to be bought online from specialist retailers (unless you live locally to them), and the hardware is all imported far-eastern...

    Favourite hand plane and why

Mine is my renovated Record no.4 I've fettled with it over time and it now takes a wafer thin sliver off even the sketchiest pieces and leaves a virtually faultless finish. 90% of the time I pick it up when getting ready to apply finish, and it's very rare I have to use scrapers or sandpaper...

Your favourite thing you have made from reclaimed timber 🤔 📸

Posted this before, but this was my lockdown project (OK I started it prior, but pretty much all the drawers and chunk of the casework was done from March 2020 onwards... I think virtually all of this was reclaimed pallet members from work, the rest presumably would have been odds and ends. I'd...

    Paint stripper recommendations please!

Hi all, We have the below door taken off the bathroom cupboard as part of a bathroom facelift. It has been done in what I presume is the same white Non-drip gloss everything else in the house is. The exposed bits of wood on the back/side suggest well aged pine and we would prefer to...

Recommendation of where to buy Aluminium Extrusion.

My bad, clearly misunderstood what he was looking for there. I figured it might have been a more exotic grade I hadn't come across, or something the Americans use...

Recommendation of where to buy Aluminium Extrusion.

Dore Metals have an extensive range of aluminium if you're based in Kent or near Bristol (they also ship and have a cutting service). Always found them to be very competitive and good to deal with. Not sure if they will carry 8000 series, but they may be able to get it for you (worst they...

    Safe woodstain

Hard wax oil probably isn't a bad shout, it's hard as nails. The Fiddes branded stuff is also certified to EN71 (for finishing children's toys) https://fiddes.co.uk/product/hard-wax-oil/ Only thing I would say is give it a couple of weeks in a well ventilated area to cure/dispel the vapours...

Exporting furniture to Europe, custom fees, general dubious behaviour.

As a "hands-off" approach to export I would suggest contacting a company called Davies Turner; my employer is a small/medium sized manufacturer and we use them precisely for this reason. They've done everything from small boxes to 1.5T pallets and take care of everything. There are two ways of...
