    Watching TV v Going outside.

The scientific basis is described in several levels of detail in the IPCC Assement report 6 (https://www.ipcc.ch/report/ar6/syr/). Between the headline statements, summary for policymakers, and longer report, you should be able to find answers to most questions you have regarding this. But, to...

    Sleeper wall

We have a small sleeper wall, 3 sleepers high. I put rebar in the bottom sleeper and postcreted these into the ground. Then I fixed the three sleepers together using galvanised heavy duty flat strap and 120 mm screws on the hidden back and side. It's held fine for 18 months. I actually had to...

    Sketchup

I'm learning to use it currently to plan out some changes to our garden. I've no experience with design software but am generally good with software. I've found the learning curve quite steep, in that the first 2-3 hours I was banging my head against the wall. But after getting my head around...

    Everclear Alcohol UK Equivalent

Search for "clear methylated spirits" or "clear denatured alcohol" to avoid getting the stuff with the purple dye in. I last got a few litres of the stuff from J C Penny Restoration in Southampton, but their website seems to be down. But you can also get it from Amazon and others.

Advice on paint sprayers for emulsion paint

We moved into our house last year and wanted to redecorate each room. I used a Wagner W690 to spray all the walls and ceilings in the house, excluding the bathroom and kitchen. I'm crap at painting - particularly cutting in, hence the appeal of spraying to me. We decided to paint all the rooms...

Bora speedhorse v toughbuilt C700 v Axminster own brand saw horses

I have the Axminster ones. I don't use them day to day, but they had ~3 months everyday use when we were renovating our house (and then served as the legs on an improvised dining table for another 6 months). I've been very happy with them and would be happy to replace like for like if they got...

    Quangsheng No.62 low angle vs No.5 vs No.5 1/2?

I own a QS No. 5 that I bought from Workshop Heaven. I've been very happy with it. I don't make big things - the largest in recent years was a small wall cabinet. Therefore, I use a Record No. 6 as a jointer, my No. 5 as a jack, and a No. 3 as a smoother. The No. 5 has been very nice to use and...

what's wrong with my planing technique?

When I started handplaning, I would get similar results if I just continuously planed a face or edge from end to end - most of the time I end up taking off more from the farthest edge - be it with or across the grain. I don't know the cause. I had wondered if it was me systematically applying...

Best planer thicknesser for cupped, warped boards

Good point - i forgot that detail. When skimming them they set the thicknesser to ~1mm thinner than the nominal scaffold board thickness from their supplier. Often times one pass like that for all the boards was enough to get to the kinds of levels of flattness they are working with. When it...

Best planer thicknesser for cupped, warped boards

I used to volunteer at a wood recycling center that made furniture, including dining tables, out of reclaimed scaffold boards. Their process to make a table top was: - Random orbit sand the scaffold boards all over with 40g, then 80g. Primarily to clean the boards off and get a feel for the...

Going around ever decreasing spirals until disappearing up.........

I think that's a big cut to do with a freehand router and I'm not confident I'd get good results. If I were to have a go at this, I think I'd be inclined to try bandsawing it first.

8mm collet for Makita 3612 Router

Yup, Axminster sell a 1/2" to 8mm collet sleeve. I bought one the other week to use in my Makita, and it works just fine. https://www.axminstertools.com/axcaliber-collet-reduction-sleeve-1-2-1-4-666079

Advice on my first good set of chisels

I've been very happy with the set of 4 Ashley Iles chisels (1/4", 1/2", 3/4", and 1"). I enjoy using them and I think they they have been good value at ~£120. I've never needed a bigger or smaller chisel than this set provided, but I suppose that does depends on what projects take your interest.

    Dutch tool chest

Morning. I used these and was happy with them: Fine Shank Rose Heads | Old House Store I expect they can be found cheaper, but this store was just round the corner from me. I know there are quite a few sellers of cut nails on etsy too.

    Men In Sheds

I think projects that can be done in an evening/afternoon, whilst also teaching some useful skills are good for new starters. More involved projects can become overwhelming and frustrating. For example, making a set of hardwood coasters starting with rough lumber. With something like this, you...

    Tool chest hardware supplier

I made a Dutch tool chest 18 months ago. I used the 9 inch arrow end pewter T hinges from here: Hand Forged Hinges I've been happy with the hinges, and the company were easily to deal with. I also found another supplier of similar products (Black T Hinges | The Rustic Merchant's range of...

    Reclaimed scaffold board finishing advise

Well, I'm not really saying this is the way it *should* be done. But I do know this is how at least one of the wood recycling projects finishes it's scaffold furniture (I volunteered there for a bit), and their products certainly fit the "rustic" bill. You could be right that similar results...

    Reclaimed scaffold board finishing advise

Yes, as Marco just mentioned, you sand up to 120 grit, apply twice (brush on and wipe off), and then give a light sand with 1200 grit. It does soak into the wood, and the light sand with 1200 grit doesn't really remove any material, just knocks off the rough nibs from the oil curing and buffs...

    Reclaimed scaffold board finishing advise

I know that several of the wood recycling projects that make furnitue out of reclaimed scaffold board use the Osmo products for finishing. To finish they sand to 120 grit, brush on a thin coat of Osmo oil and wipe off. They apply two coats and then rub down with 1200 grit paper. At that point...
