    Five favourite quotes.

Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful. - Albert Schweitzer No piece is cut too short. It was meant for a smaller project. Before you act, listen. Before you react, think. Before you spend, earn. Before...

Aliexpress, a bit of an odd one this week

I’ve had problems, too. Tracking said “in transit”, then “cannot deliver”. Then was changed to “delivered”, but wasn’t. Evri don’t have proof of delivery. Tried to get a refund, but refused by Ali Express because I can’t prove I didn’t receive it! I’ve now got to go back via either Evri or...

    Lets see your wood

From experience, it’s very difficult to price wood like this and also difficult to find the best place to sell it. The main problem however is it takes a very long time to catalogue what you have so is available for sale. Do you have a local Woodturning club - the may be interested and getting...

Catch for "cupboard" door for exterior use

Do you not think that the ball will rust or stick from being outside (with no maintenance)

Catch for "cupboard" door for exterior use

I'm making a small enclosure to house a "sign-on" sheet and clipboard, as per photo / render. It's roughly 600x450mm in size and will be outside, fastened to a wall. The door will not be locked, but I need a catch to stop the door blowing open in the wind. The catch doesn't need to have much...

What's the most astounding work in wood you've seen?

The teak ceiling in Bamburg castle is pretty awesome. Tons of Thai teak. Actually a false ceiling, in the Great Hall. https://mdmusingsie.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/bamburghkingshallroof_sm.jpg

    Sanding Sealer Question

It’s probably worth asking Terry Smart at Chestnut finishes. He’s very helpful. He publishes a weekly newsletter (yours may get featured) where he answers questions regarding different finishes. And, by the way, don’t thin the sanding sealer - it’s the right consistency out of the tin (ask...

    Plug advice / help

No, all the pins appear to be the same diameter, with the lower two having flats on the inside, so that it is only possible to fit it in the socket one way.

    Plug advice / help

I think if I was going to the trouble of buying a new transformer, i'd go "the whole hog" and buy a new hedge cuter. I'm just trying to use old stuff that works in this case, rather than wasting some more of the earth's resources. But I may end up with a new hedge cutter ...

    Plug advice / help

Do you mean "fit a modern socket" into the transformer? Not sure of clearance etc. inside the transformer. I suspect the transformer will still work and it may still power the hedge cutter it came with

    Plug advice / help

Hi, I have an old 110V transformer and need a plug to fit it. I'm not sure what this type of plug is called (i.e. what to search for on eBay etc.). It looks like the "lower" two pins have flats on the inside. Has anyone any clues as to what I'm looking for? Thanks

    Making a finial

I'm making a finial which is about 1500mm long in total, out of iroko. The top part of it is a "spike" which is hexagonal. See pictures of original, CAD render of new one, measurements of new one (110mm a/f, 560mm long). I'm after some "best practice" for making this. I can think of three ways...

    Ni Cad drill battery.

Try looking for a "copy" battery on eBay - did that when the NiCads on an old Makita ran out. Replaced with "no brand" lithium ones for little money and no fuss.

Is there anyone who can re machine/make planer knives

Have you tried Lancashire Saw company for blades / grinding? I had good service from them.
