    Ply lining recommendations.

The space was a real moisture trap at one point, and even a weather resistant Medite MDF worktop went mouldy (!). It's insulated now, and there's a dehumidifier but I'm concerned that if the dehumidifier was off and I was on holiday or something all that might start up again. Call it an...

    Ply lining recommendations.

My workshop (roughly 3m x 3m0 has 50mm celotex between the uprights and a ventilated airgap between that and the outer wooden cladding. I need to line it now. I've been saving up for it but have just looked at prices and wow, depressing isn't it. I'm keeping moisture down with a dehumidifier...

Keeping things dry in me little workshop

Thanks all. I've ordered a small humidifier, and have some dessicant beads, and also ordered a humidity meter, which will allow me to keep an eye on it. Very grateful for seeing all your approaches and solutions to this. It's a great overview of the sorts of challenges on this topic, almost none...

Keeping things dry in me little workshop

I have a 3m x 4m workshop lined with 50mm insulation internally (there's an airgap outside of that before external classing, I posted about that I think in the past but I can't seem to find it). I'm soon cladding on top of the insulation internally with ply ... just 'saving up'!. I've got a...

    Help with insulation choice

I've finally completed the cold roof, vented at either end and insect meshed as advised. I now have the walls to do, are these vented top and bottom too? Seems extreme?! Or can you just leave an airgap without vents for walls?

    How Much Does Woodworking Cost?

I can confirm this method is highly, highly effective. My house is rammed to the gunnels with tools I have purchased for one off jobs and will likely never use again. My brain is the same, creaking at the joints with skills acquired that will never be required again. I do wonder if it might have...

    Help with insulation choice

Thanks Fitz, I'm being more and more tempted toward the sort of cold roof you describe. The rafters are 93mm deep and the wall studs are 87mm deep (no idea why they're different, whatever). If I opt for 50mm PIR all round, that would give a vent space of 43mm on the roof and 37mm on the walls...

    Help with insulation choice

Seems to be a common speed-typing error of mine. Probably built up from muscle-memory due to insulting so many people Phil. Mod edit: Title fixed, but the rest is on you. :)

    Help with insulation choice

Sorry for taking forever with follow up questions ... this is a long term project! Are you referring her to what I've seen elswhere as a "hybrid" roof? This looks much simpler than creating a vent space between the roof ply and the insulation.

    Help with insulation choice

My shed is basically a single course of bricks with 2 x 4 frame. A1protect membrane was atached to this this and then the whole thing covered with featherboard cladding. The roof is felt, plywood, then A1protect onto the 2 x 4 frame. In this respect, it's built like Peter Parfitt's shed...

Cottage back door for the M-I-L

The old door is off and the new one is in Thank you so much to everyone for their patience and help. It's taken forever, mainly due to lack of available time, but it's finally in and the MIL is absolutely delighted. It's only got a couple of bolts on there at the moment with they...

Cottage back door for the M-I-L

When fitting Tee Hinges, do you put the hinges on the door or the frame first, and are there any rules regarding whre the hinge-pin center of rotation goes (can't think of another way to put that!). And yes, I'd be surprised if there is another project running as ridiculously slowly as this...

Cottage back door for the M-I-L

This is possible. They've told me to fit it with just bolts inside initially. Once it's in I can retrofit something like this. Might actually be the best way as I'm less likely to screw something up due to my inexperience if I can see the whole thing in situ first. I'm sure when you've done this...

Cottage back door for the M-I-L

Thanks, I have a gatemate myself, didn't think of that. Will look into it.

Cottage back door for the M-I-L

Just bolts. I'd like to fit a proper lock if possible but they said just bolts was ok if there wasn't a better solution. It's a back door so not like it's the main entrance - they never 'exit' (and lock) the door to go our and about for example, just to go into the garden.

Cottage back door for the M-I-L

Another update from the worlds longest running door project, including an urgent plea for help with locks: Last week I glazed the door with 6mm toughened glass using linseed oil putty. Seems ok, some cleanup to do! Bought some strap hinges that were terrible so returned them: Found some...

Cottage back door for the M-I-L

Sorry I've been building rather than photographing! First big project really, of anything bigger than a small box! So go easy on me, I'm trying my best. I'm sure every bit of it could be improved upon. I've taken it to the site and cut it to fit the frame since this was taken and am quite...

Cottage back door for the M-I-L

Just getting to the end of this project. Anyone have any advice on the best primer/paint or other products to use for painting a sapele exterior door? Originally the mother-in-law was thinking of a natural wood finish, but now wants paint. Actually, as good as it would look in a natural finish...

10mm holes in 8mm mild steel

Noob metalworking question from an intermediate woodworker... I want to make some 10mm holes for bolts in some 8mm thick mild steel bar I have, for use as brackets. I've got a good pillar drill. I don't have a drill vice. Maybe I should invest in one of those. Should I just go at it with a...
