    Keir Starmer

Here is another quote from the same paper: "There can be no doubt that Maori have, at times, been treated unfairly, patronised, exploited, duped and marginalised. We live, though, in times of reconciliation and reparation. New Zealand has established an unmatched record in this endeavour...

    Keir Starmer

It's interesting reading these debates from the other side of the globe. Here in NZ, we parallel the UK in so many ways and have many of the same (or similar) problems, many borne out of good intentions that have backfired. We have a bloke on our $50 note by the name of Apirana Ngata - one of...

What wood would and what wood wouldn't make your preferred species to work with.

Unfortunately, most wood merchants only stock pine and MDF in NZ, with any nice local species being too expensive or rare to use. Most decent wood is imported into NZ - US Ash, maple, cherry and walnut are nice, if you can find them. I don't think many have mentioned sapele, but I like it...

Bosch Shredder - Last chance saloon?

Hi, my 2 cents worth - I have one of this brand, Hansa. https://www.hansaproducts.com/gb/products/gravity-feed-wood-chippers/#chippers-40to130mm-uk They are made in NZ and are very good and robust. My c7 chips branches up to 70 mm but will do bigger if you are careful and has chipped...

Hello fellow wood enthusiasts, is this ok or would it be an issue.

Could you laminate 3 x 1mm thick strips, which would bend quite easily over a hot pipe? That would make it stronger, and you could incorporate a rebate easily. edit...Oh, rats, should have read on as this has already been suggested. Cheers Richard

    No Fault Evictions

Dabop, I feel your pain. We had a family (Whanau) who wrecked our rental. By the sound of it, we got off fairly lightly with only a $5k internal repaint, although the dings in the internal doors and gouges in the floor have never been fixed. The thing was that they turned a nice little house...

    Elemen'tary Design screwdriver

I'm sure it does. The above is just my opinion in tool reviews on a tool I bought. I have a similar set to yours, it is versatile, but IMHO the Elementary one has a nice feel and I think that will be my go-to general purpose screwdriver in future. Cheers Richard

    Elemen'tary Design screwdriver

Actually, the one pictured before (which I pinched off the net) may be an older version. Mine (below) has a nice collet to secure the bit as well as a magnet within.

    Elemen'tary Design screwdriver

Recently bought an Elemen'tary Design screwdriver #1 from Thomas Flinn. Must say I'm rather pleased with it - as the blurb says, it's the only screwdriver you will ever need. Nicely done with an oil-finished Beech handle with flat sides so it won't roll away. Effective locking system for the...

    Radius acoustic guitar sides

On my first guitar, from memory, I used a radiused sanding stick with sandpaper attached - about 40-50 mm wide that spans the width of the guitar - I think that was an idea from the Kinkade book - I'll have to check. Worked OK although the radiused dishes are better.

Who's got it better US or UK Woodworkers?

Well, you are all better off than us in the deep South in the land of Mordor where all you can get is pine, pine ply or pine-based chipboard/MDF unless you are willing to sell a kidney (actually, probably both) for some protected local hardwood or import it from the US. :( Cheers Richard

    Help with a hatchet

De-rusted (with citric acid), polished up a bit and new handle (with the head on with the pointy bit down). The heft means it splits kindling well. The main thing I wanted a go at was attaching the head with the wedge, which turned out well, so now I feel a lot happier about tackling a full...

    Help with a hatchet

This is what I was going on. I've managed to get the head off and am soaking it citric acid although it'll never look as nice as this one pictured below!! I think the picture I took distorts the shape and its fairly symmetrical.

    Help with a hatchet

Hi, I've inherited an old (and quite heavy) hatchet and I have been debating whether it is worth spending some time making a new handle for it and generally de-rusting and doing it up - the handle has a long split on one side and, as I'm planning to re-handle a full-size axe, this would be...

    Helping at a repair cafe

One 'tool' that has turned out to be very handy at our repair cafe is a small portable bench with a vice. I made one very similar to this... https://www.finewoodworking.com/project-guides/shop-projects/mini-workbench-works-wonders. Cheers Richard

    Helping at a repair cafe

Hi - I've been involved in a repair cafe for some time (in New Zealand, but under the same umbrella oganisation as the UK). As has been mentioned by several, the aim is really to help folk fix things that would otherwise end up in landfill and at the same time, try and pass on a few skills and...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Thanks. I can't make out the name either. I tried googling various combinations of what I thought it might be, but drew a blank. In this case the blade was quite thick, so plenty of scope to grind off the rust. I'm not too sure if this knife has a specific function, but it won't be used for...
