    ebonizing

i think those are mostly pear apart from the base of the second which was some random wood, maybe sycamore? that piece went more brown than black. best i have found in general is pear, apple or cherry, nice tight grain and easily absorb the tea/iron. i tried oak which has quite a high tannin...

    Axminster AH-1218VS or similar

like i say i have nothing to compare it to but yes i find the motors power to be good. i have several chucks including a masterchuck ii & multistar duplex, around 4"/5" diameter? nothing very big.

    Axminster AH-1218VS or similar

i have one and i like it but it's my first lathe so have nothing to compare it to! it's been used pretty much every day for 9 months without a problem. if i chose again i'd probably get one that allowed for slightly bigger bowl turning but not by much. also i have problems with chatter when i...

    ebonizing

i haven't tried anything else yet as i really liked the result from this. if the tea has soaked into the wood then the reaction with the iron takes place within the wood and not just on the surface so it's pretty cool. i would image indian ink would be pretty similar as what the tannin iron...

    ebonizing

oh should have said, the top finials are actually ebony, the rest is ebonized.

    ebonizing

i've been having lots of fun ebonizing wood so i thought i'd share a few pics. i like black to contrast the other wood but only have a few piano sharps of ebony so to make some bigger black bits of wood i tried ebonizing. first i turned the pieces and sanded to 320ish, then i dropped them in a...

    screw threads

this is all really really making me want a metal lathe! thanks for all the help :)

    screw threads

well it is 3/8ths not 7/8ths and the way i measured the tpi was to count the number of turns per inch and then test with my thread gauge. it does have 9 turns per inch but it does not really match the profile in the thread gauge. this would not be a major problem for wood threads as they are...

    screw threads

yeah thread chaser do look like the way to go for most things but even if i could get a thread going i'm not going to be able to make an internal one that small :( i would love a metal work lathe but chances of getting one are slim i think! thanks.

help- in need of some very basic advice/guidance

a faceplate, a nice chuck, a big bowl gouge, a squew and a parting chisel and you can do pretty much anything. i started turning recently and have made lidded pots, bowls, pens, candlesticks, beads, all manner of things and that's pretty much all i use. also a roughing gouge, a center drive and...

    screw threads

i've become a bit obsessed with making screw threads in wood. i have had some success. (tho thread chasing appears to be impossible!) the kits for turning screw threads with a thread box and a tap are way too expensive for just messing around so bargain hunter that i am i've been picking up...

Complete beginner - on the verge of giving up.....

this post sounds very familiar. i had loads of trouble with bowls till i realized that what i though was a bowl gouge was not in fact a bowl gouge. once i got myself a nice long hefty one, turning was a joy. you can do pretty much anything with one and i very rarely get any catches anymore.

    mutistar duplex chuck

surely you would expect sawdust at some point, the size of the shavings getting progressively smaller as the turning becomes more refined? but by sawdust i probably do mean wood shavings. i should probably invest in some kind of high necked apron or a boilersuit or something.

    mutistar duplex chuck

my multistar did turn out to be a 3/4 x 16 tpi and i got a thread converted from axminster for £16. it is a really nice chuck and i'm having a lot of fun with it. now my only problem is every time i turn anything i end up with a bra dull of sawdust.

    mutistar duplex chuck

oh and as a bonus a quick google of thread gauges has lead to the identification of one of the mystery tools lurking in my grandads tool box that my dad left me. i was wondering what they were!

    mutistar duplex chuck

i have the instructions but can't find anything about the thread size apart from a hand written '04'. the plasticine is a great tip, thanks :)

    mutistar duplex chuck

i have had a multistar duplex super MK III for quite some time, i thought it was to fit a 1" 8tpi lathe spindle but i just tried it on my lathe and it seems it is not, it's a lovely looking chuck and i would like to try it out and i was thinking maybe i can find some kind of adapter but my...
