    What Generator To Buy

Bear in mind your car(s) are little petrol generators, and more likely to start than a generator used once a year? They are mobile and have large tanks of fresh fuel. Definitely worth having fast USB chargers in cars, and consider (if it's just freezers you want to do) an inverter. You'll...

Advice on a purchased Startrite table saw

Great buy! 200kg should be fine to move, especially with some help. I'd do almost anything to avoid removing the top for transit.

    Workshop socket layout

I have some sockets in the middle of the ceiling, and find I use them all the time - e.g. vacuum, power tools, ceiling extractor. Very handy. Also good to have a big switch by the door for the "big machines" e.g. bandsaws, and a secondary always-on circuit for battery chargers. If you have...

    Attic hoist / elevator design

It does look complex, and if/when it goes wrong, it's going to be bad. Over-sized mirror pulled through floor, damaging structural beams and sending glass/metal shards through to the valuable cars beneath... If it was a DIY job then something like a simple hoist pulling up a cage (e.g. one of...

    Tablet/phone charging

If changing the USB charger, it often makes sense to get one of the even more powerful ones: I have one of these in each car, which will charge multiple devices at ludicrous speeds and even my laptop. 130W charger: https://amzn.to/46RbsoE by Ugreen (reasonably recognisable brand). Many of the...

    DIY Powerwall / Battery

Thanks for the write-up johnb80, very professional job. May I ask what laser cutter you use to get those smart boards? Did you look at diverting energy into hot water? I've held a belief that it's more cost-efficient to hold energy in hot water than in batteries, perhaps this is out of date...

    Combination Pliers

I recently bought a 24" adjustable spanner (Amazon, unbranded) for a specific task of bending some metal. Lots of leverage, made it easy, much better than fitting some pipe on the end of a spanner. It's come in handy several times as a hammer, and it's amazing at adjusting those big hinges on...

Stud finders - do any of them work?

Little neo magnets are great for finding plasterboard screws (and marking them- put 20 magnets on 20 screws and it becomes easier to visualise the wall construction. I've tried a few of the "stud finders", none of them worked, then bought a v. expensive (for my humble uses) Franklin "M210" stud...

Simple electronics circuit to keep power bank alive?

Not a fan of foxes, but I hope you get lots of good hedgehog videos! You can get USB-to-6v converters off the shelf, very easily. (Most voltages are available now e.g. 12/9v, very handy for powering CCTV/switches/kit etc). They will probably work better with the larger 10,000mAh battery packs...

Why are router usually lifts so expensive?

Thanks Deema, good insight. I'll look for your longer post on the forum (mentioned earlier). I have a router table, and also an old Kity spindle moulder which I haven't actually ever used because it's so much bigger (and more terrifying) than the router.

Planer thicknesser mobile cart 600 kilos

My low-tech solution for a very heavy table saw was to bolt it down to a sturdy pallet, then use a pallet-jack to move it whenever I need to. I probably move it once a year. If you were moving it weekly it might get annoying.

Armouring internet cable under grave driveway

OP, are you sure the fibre-optic cable isn't already armoured? It seems unlikely for a professional installer to put it in just 6" down, under a gravel driveway, un-armoured. If it is armoured, then (I believe) it should be fine to surround it with sand, ideally with some caution tape above...

    Which 18g Brad nailer?

I have Makita kit, but keep looking at the Ryobi nailer. I already have a Ryobi adapter to use Makita batteries with it. I still have air in the workshop, but have moved most of my tools to cordless now. Don't be held back by the battery brand.

    Labelling system

Another vote for Brother, works well, I use about 1% of the fancy functions on it. Wide range of tapes, if that's useful. I also keep a set of sharpies and Eddings paint pens around for quicker labelling. And chalk pens for temporary marking, very handy. (I'm intrigued by AES's mention of...

MFT-style vs. Trad-style workbench design (is there a middle ground??)

It's going to be a fabulous workbench. What are you planning on making on it? BTW, if you ever want to move the workbench, these retractable castor wheels are quite neat, and the feet adjust to the floor: 4pcs GD-60F 3.2" Industrial Casters Plate Casters Swivel Wheel Retractable Leveling...

Concur - I've had some masking tape over this for years, works fine!

    Need to escape/reset

Richard_C's post is good. From my pov, I think a real "next step" is to sort out taking some holiday. Not taking any holiday isn't good for you. Nor is it good for your school, it will be something your HR/manager are worrying about. Or should be. Don't worry FOR them, it's their job to...

    Hobby machine shop layout help

Can you put the compressor in a corner? Of all the machines, the compressor seems most suited to being tucked out of the way, rather than in the middle of your workshop, so long as you have easy access to the hose. If you have more space in the other building it could go there too.

Bitumastic or asphalt flooring and/or cheaper options

I poured Screwfix/Mapei self levelling SLC over my rough concrete floor, very thin layer. Some give/flex, much more comfortable to walk/stand on, and easier to move heavy machinery. Very easy to do (with a spiked roller).

    Battery compatibility

I have a Makita chainsaw (it's great BTW) and a Ryobi pole-chainsaw. The Ryobi runs using a Badapter off my Makita batteries. I really don't want to start another collection of batteries. The Badapters seem to be cheaper on Amazon than from their own site.
