    Canadian Western Red Cedar alternative?

Iroko - I wouldn’t use British WRC as it lacks the same durability as the colder, slower grown stuff from North America

    Outdoor bench slats recommendation

Virgin Forest Burma Teak would be best, then probably Iroko? Where abouts are you? I have both in stock if it helps? If you do decide to go down the oak path, you really want air dried English oak or at least european air died oak. Kiln dried american oak simply won’t last

    Ash for outdoors?

Ash is about the least suitable wood you could use. I have seen where in boats it has been in contact with some of the worlds most durable hardwoods and it’s caused them to rot too. As others have said, the cheapest, highly durable option will be Iroko. Opepe and Balau are other possibilities...

Wood with the most severe grain raising ?

In my experience the lighter, fluffier khaya mahogany can be a nightmare - some of the lighter, fluffy grained meranti can be troublesome too.

Advice restoring antique top (of small set of drawers)

Hi Colin, have you tried all the tricks for undoing the screws? Sharp tap on the end of the screwdriver? Long screwdriver allowing weight and leverage? Tried tightening the screw then undoing to free them? If those all fail, a screwdriver bit in a brace allows a lot of leverage on the screw. If...
