    Losing a pet

Every time it happens my wife and I drive back from the vets bawling like two 5 year olds who've just been robbed of their ice creams - God knows what people at traffic lights must think when they look over :) Two of the best friends I ever had. When they went within 18 months of each other...

Lathe chucks, what do I have here?

You can use a stiff wire brush to clean a polishing mop when it's spinning, and the old-guy polishers at my friends factory use a strip of wood with nails in it to open the weave up. Having said that, for a home shop user it's probably better just to buy a new one :)

Your favourite thing you have made from reclaimed timber 🤔 📸

I posted this up a few years ago - but it's still my favourite piece. I found these old fire doors and desk legs and runners in a skip. Took 6 months of weekend woodworking to make my desk. And in the last month made a simple set of desktop speakers from the same firedoors (with...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Simple closed box desk speakers. Pine 15mm'ish internal box and divider, sides clad in a 5mm veneer of 1950's fire door (meranti, sapele...who knows), back a solid board of same about 15mm thick. and zebrano fronts (8mm veneer on 3/4" ply). Mark Audio cones from KJF Audio.

    Removing paint from cement

Sort of - the rods randomly 'bounced' a few mm in and out, impacting the surface and removing any paint or contamination. While looking for a picture of one, I found this - seems like exactly what you're trying to accomplish. (It's not the tool I used, but seems to do a similar job)

    Removing paint from cement

When I worked on motorway resurfacing many years ago, for smaller areas of concrete we had hand held scarifiers - think big hair-drier with a load of thin steel rods where the hot air comes out. Might work :)

    Signing work

On my chessboards I use the method Stig suggested - heated brass stamp. Mine is very simple, but you can get some very detailed ones. Downside, it's not cheap.

    Dies for press.

From my experience case hardening is more trouble, more expensive, and the results aren't as good as just buying and using O1. Cromwell Tools Flat Stock (Edit - Would a small case-hardened mild-steel die cope with up to 2 tons of pressure?).

Precision ground flat stones - UK supplier?

Hard to find, there's a guy on Practical Machinist.com selling them, from Europe, still not cheap though.

Simple milling using a pillar drill - is it possible?

A 4mm 4 flute endmill, cutting ali should be up around the 12-16000 rpm range :)

Bosch PBD 40 Drill - Table?

I don't use my PBD often, but I'm very glad I have it when I have to. For woodwork it's perfect, but some people think the run-out is a bit much for any precision metalwork. You can improve it by replacing the chuck with one of the Rohm Supra-s chucks (SUPRA-S Quick-action Drill Chucks |...

Two 25L unknown 'coolant' barrels, care to guess the contents?

Unfortunately there are no pictures of their products. Their main site lists 9 different areas they produce products for, the 'Industrial' section shows 15 subsections, and the 'Cutting fluid' area lists 11 different types of cutting/grinding oil! (Yeah, I never realised there was such a massive...

Two 25L unknown 'coolant' barrels, care to guess the contents?

I haven't opened them in a 4 months, I can't remember if they have a smell - I'm off work until next Wednesday, I'll check then. Definitely not gritty though, and the green is a lot thicker than the blue.

Two 25L unknown 'coolant' barrels, care to guess the contents?

We have a contract with a waste disposal firm who take all our old fluids, as well as the various liquids from the on site automotive teaching centre - getting rid of it isn't a problem, but it'd be a shame to just get rid of it when it could potentially be worth a couple of hundred quid a...
