    Oh moments in workshop

This particular pinch only happened to me once when I was only 5-6 years old. My father was an electrician and had a message (no phone) to please call at the local blacksmith and farrier to investigate an electrical fault. I accompanied him and got fiddling with the blacksmith's leg vice...

Should I bin my old stanley chisels and buy softer steel chisels

Ah, but it's the 'once you've got it' bit that's easier to come by for some than it is for others! 😊 Although I promise myself that I'll 'get it' if I try hard enough for long enough I still fall back on my old Eclipse jig from time to time.

    Talk about rip-off Britain.

In fairness to the gunsmiths they replaced my Lee Enfield with another one but it was a 'bitsa' and all the metalwork had been blacked whereas mine had been all original with a nice patina on the stock and metalwork. When I bought it there was a competition sight fitted so I guess it was used...

    Talk about rip-off Britain.

Obviously some committed shooters on here. I've had a few air rifles over the years. Started off with a BSA Cadet, then a couple of Airsporters and HW97K which I sold a couple of years ago and bought a BSA Ultra SE. We moved house and the 97K made a hell of a rattle which I feared was going to...

    lathe

Spot on with the cost of additional tooling or accessories. These can cost as much as the lathe. I like the ML8. I had a green one but sold it for something smaller. Wish I hadn't. The only minor irritation was that the bed tube could get full of shavings causing the tailstock to jam when moving...

    Radio interference from LED battens.

Whoa - steady on there! An engineer? Moi?

    Radio interference from LED battens.

Crumbs, and there was me looking for a simple solution. Earlier today I ordered a couple of TDK wrap-around ferrite 'beads' in the hope that they will reduce the noise even if they don't eliminate it. I thought it worth a fiver to give it a go. Thanks for your replies gents.

    Radio interference from LED battens.

Thanks for that info. I was hoping for something like the ferrite core that would simply clip on to the 3-core mains cable but from your reply it sounds like I need open up the 3-core and attach one on the 'live' and another on 'neutral'? I don't fancy trying to open the batten unit itself. I'll...

    Radio interference from LED battens.

After buying a couple of 240v 30W 3' LED batten lights in October I'm finally getting round to fitting them. A quick-and-dirty test is very promising as far as light levels go, but the interference on my workshop FM radio (e.g. BBCR4) is horrendous. Luckily the test coincided with 'The Archers'...

    Tips & Tricks

In a previous life I remember reading an account of someone who lost an arm. An electrician was working on a set of steps to replace a bulb (or maybe it was a fluorescent tube?) in an overhead workshop light. He lost his footing and fell onto the blade of a tablesaw that was being operated with...

    Evri....or is it?!

So much seems to depend on the local courier. We had an Evri fella who was excellent. He left, and we had a short period of poor service from what I assume was a series of temporary people who clearly hadn't done 'the knowledge' on our scattered rural area. Now we have decent service - until the...

    Sharpening

I've spotted wheels for similar prices on eBay but they're new to me and I simply don't know enough about them. I can't justify the £140-£150 price tag frequently seen but I suspect that like most things you get what you pay for. :)

    Sharpening

Last night I tried putting an edge on a couple of secondhand turning chisels that I'd bought, using the Axminster jig, and the wheel certainly produced more dust than I remember and introduced the friction you describe. One of the irritations was that this friction hindered smooth rotation of...

    Sharpening

It's only since my wish to return to a bit of turning that I dragged mine out from under the bench. The original toolrests on the grinder were tiny and next to useless hence this purchase. I think it was probably about half the current price. I'd really like to improve my freehand sharpening...

    Sharpening

An interesting read as I'm just trying to revive my limited turning skills which inevitably means revisiting my even more limited skill at sharpening the tools. I have an elderly Electra Beckum bench grinder and the Axminster grinding jig below. Had them for years. Works ok for flat blades but...

    Table saw or bandsaw?

Thanks for all your replies people. I do already have a table saw, and have a love/hate relationship with it, but I've been watching a few online woodturning videos to try and refresh my aged brain and of course many turners have a bandsaw. I think for the time being I'll hang fire, keep the...

    Table saw or bandsaw?

Been there, know what you mean. In fairness, my space doubles for other domestic and DIY storage. Even so I have to drag machinery to the middle of the space to use it and hook up dust extractor. Setup/takedown can be frustrating. :)

    Table saw or bandsaw?

Having recently acquired a small lathe I'm finding my 16'x8' workshop a bit cramped. If you had to choose between a table saw and a bandsaw which would you choose? I have a planer and thicknesser and all the usual hand tools.

    Choosing a chuck.

Thanks, that was an interesting read. An update on my own situation. When the delivery date for my SK88 was looming I was watching for an email from Axminster to notify despatch. When none arrived I contacted them, and after a day or so got an email to say that this chuck wasn't going to be...
