£1,000 budget for a planer thicknesser - what would you buy?

I've had one if these for 20yrs and it's a lovely, hard working piece of kit. Rock solid in use, and dismantleable and rebuildable. The only thing of which I'm cautious is the blade securing mechanism. It's not a wedge shaped holder, but straight sided so theoretically could throw a blade if...

Welcome. I love the rotating catch on your chisel box. Very elegant.👍🏻

    Helping at a repair cafe

I've volunteered at my local Repair Caff for a few years. There are several different 'repair stations' ranging from jewellery, clothing to electrical and mechanical. The woodworking station is one of the quieter ones. Chair leg repairs, general gluing and pinning of assorted wooden things Have...

Recommendations for seasoning a holly log

I've ordered a fresh blade from Ian and will quarter saw it as best I can. Then I'll try different approaches and expect them all to fail.

Recommendations for seasoning a holly log

Thanks for all the replies. I'm going to try slabbing into 1" boards, kiln half of them and store the others on end in the barn. I'll also periodically chant incantations and sprinkle unicorn tears on the exposed surface when the moon is full 🙏🏻

Recommendations for seasoning a holly log

I'll bear it in mind. Many of the tales surrounding holly seasoning sound like a secret society's initiation rites...

Recommendations for seasoning a holly log

I'm happy to leave it in the round for a few years if that's likely to work better. I also have access to a kiln on a neighbouring farm. I just don't know what best practice is?

Recommendations for seasoning a holly log

I've been donated a holly trunk that arrived this morning. It's about one metre in length and 16-20cm across. I asked the donor to seal the ends with melted wax as soon as it was felled, and it was then couriered in pallet wrap. I've now removed the pallet and am wanting advice about the best...

    Wadkin FM24” Planer Restoration

Jack Forsberg knows a ton about these machines and has restored and improved quite a few. He has an RM. He's a really nice chap and I'm sure would be a good source of advice as you undertake the project. You can find him here: https://www.instagram.com/jackenglishmachines/ Good luck and keep us...

Making Curved Hinges for Oak Gate

Absolutely superb work Scotty. I really appreciate the detail of the write-up and stage photos. A very cunning way to deal with the top capping - ingenious and practical. I feel confident that the client was very happy with it.

Any central heating epxerts on here - oil fired Riello burner

Over the 30yrs I've been here I've gone through a pump seal, a control box and a couple of flame sensors. The sticky fan I referred to to was solved by a judicious clean out to the casing in which it was binding

Any central heating epxerts on here - oil fired Riello burner

The fan could be running freely until it gets hot then something could be binding and preventing it from rotating when it tries to restart. The sound file deffo sounded like a motor trying to start up? I hope you get it fixed soon. M

Any central heating epxerts on here - oil fired Riello burner

My boiler is over 35yrs old and I've encountered a few things with it. The second audio file sounds like the fan trying to start but failing. It could be that the fan has become stuck on the housing. After removing the power, try raising the shutter assembly (see image on link below) and...

    Safe workshop heater?

There are two ways of doing this: 1. A 12V supply from a 'leisure battery' and a mains powered charger 2. A mains powered 12V supply and a backup battery Like @Robbo3 and many others I use a mains powered 12V supply, but also have a small rechargeable battery. There's a module that senses if...

Shellac as a finish in UK

I have used Liberon Spirit Sanding Sealer for years as a shellac finish although I notice it has been removed from Liberon's web site. Dries quickly and easy to apply. I've contacted them to ask what they offer as a replacement
