Thanks, Hans. I wasn't able translate the text, but the pictures were very helpful. Ed :)

    pepper mill

Thanks. I'm still wondering, though...the max length of a 1 1/16" bit is 5" but what if I want to buy a 12" or larger mill kit? Please excuse my ignorance, but I feel I'm missing something. Ed  :?

    pepper mill

Hi, I'd like to turn a couple of pepper mills. I found the mechanism at a popular mail-order store (Lee Valley) which comes with plans and specs. The inner diameter is 1 1/16". I'm not sure how to achieve this; do I drill it with something like an auger bit, or can I bore this on my...

    Some new Murican saw maker

Wow, that looks really cool! If it isn't too much to ask, I'd be interested in seeing the finished product. If you have time. Thanks, Ed

    Some new Murican saw maker

Maybe this is a bit OT and if so, sorry, but I was just looking at Mike's page and there is not much there! There's no mention of saws or other things, just current work(cabinets) and wall cabinets. Am I looking at the wrong site? Ed :?

    wipe on varnish

Cloth? Well, to be honest, I just used a piece of an old T-shirt that the missus got mad and ripped up after she saw me wearing it. (it had some holes in it, but I was just wearing it as a work-shirt) Anyway, any good piece of cotton is fine. Ed :D

    wipe on varnish

I've tried Minwax in both gloss and satin. It works good, but no better than the homebrew stuff I mixed up by thinning regular polyurethane with turpentine (or other thinner of your choice). It's a LOT more expensive than home-made, though. Ed :)

That's great work, Frank! Your attention to detail never ceases to amaze me. Ed :)

    Lie Nielsen smoother

Rob's current favourite is the 5 1/2. A jewel of a plane, I must say (since I bought one from him) Ed :)

    frustrated

Thanks for the quick replies. The kilning was done by an artisan, who also kilns his own lumber. He assured me that he cuts forks from sample pieces, and used a dehumidification kiln. It seems such a waste to plane large amounts from the outsides of a thick plank to get a thinner board...

    frustrated

Ok, now I'm getting frustrated. I had some nice maple cut, sawed 2" + and kilned. I cut a few pieces yesterday to begin making a woodbox to go with my new fireplace insert. Well, the more I work the wood, the more frustrated I become. I finally got one flat face and 2 square edges, but the...

Finally my No 98 first pics

That is truly a work of art!!! Holtey must be getting nervous, right about now. Ed :D

    Mitre Saw Blades

They often have an odd number of teeth, as well. My mitre blade has 72 teeth but my table saw blades have 24, 50 and 80 teeth. Go figure. Ed :)

    Hand dovetail

Very nice Fume Hood. Keep up the good work! Ed

    Blade advice sought

I use all Dimar blades. IMHO, they're the best for the money. I have their combination blade on my table saw and the only time I change it is to put on the dado set or their rip blade if I'm going to do a lot of ripping. I took the stock blade off my mitre saw and added the Dimar blade: the...

    Spehar toolworks, Adria, et al

When Rob was teaching me, he had me draw a series of vertical lines on the end and over the top edge of a board (held vertically in a vise). I then started at the left side of the board and sawed on the left side of the lines until I got to the middle. I was then to start at the right side of...

    Spehar toolworks, Adria, et al

Well, you can't blame him for believing in the products he sells. I left out a lot of our conversation, and I'm not adding it now to take up for Rob, but in honesty, Rob did not critique my saw until I told him how much I paid, which was close to the same price as a LN. Any way you look at it...

    Spehar toolworks, Adria, et al

OK, Bugbear, you may have an arguement there, I'm too novice to know. It would be nice to see Tom Law belly-up-to-the-bar on this one. Ed

    A day with Rob Cosman

Yes, Frank, I had a great time. I took the course in his shop in Grand Bay, NB. He told me one time that the only places he can get enough shop space, with a workbench for every student, are Sheridan College in Ontario and at the SAIT college in Calgary. Someday, I'll be good enough to sell...
