Dealing with rough sawn timber that has a bow

Thanks guys, Ideally I would use / buy a different piece of timber but that's not an option at the moment as I need to get this done and I don't have any other suitably sized timber to hand. It'll probably move a little after planning but I think I can deal with a few mm of bow once it's to...

Dealing with rough sawn timber that has a bow

Hi, I'm building a couple of doors and one of the pieces of timber that I'll be using for a stile has a bit of a bow in it. The timber is 54mm thick rough sawn meranti and I need to get a 44mm thick stile out of it, the bow is about 9mm over the 2m length of the stile! On paper at least the...

    Glue Gun Recommendation

Op here, yeah, I'm sorted thanks :D As I mentioned in an earlier post I went for an Arrow TR550. I've put a few bags of glue sticks though it over the years and it's held up fine with no sign it's going to break anytime soon. I'd probably buy another if it broke.

White gloss spray finish - total spraying beginner

A quick follow up for those interested... Thanks to all for the great advice it really helped me get a good start on my search for the right spray system. After watching Peters video series on the Graco I nearly hit the buy button but after looking around some more I finally settled on the a...

White gloss spray finish - total spraying beginner

Thanks to all for the great information, certainly enough to get me started. I'm just sitting down to watch the rest of Peter's videos with a cuppa. I won't be using the equipment very often and the clean up doesn't look like fun but I think over it's lifetime it'll pay for itself. Worst case...

White gloss spray finish - total spraying beginner

Hi, I'm in the process of making a number of new windows for our house, the joinery is going well but I'm getting close to the part of the job I'm really not looking forward to, painting. Last time I built a batch of windows hand applying the paint took nearly as long as building the windows...

    Cupped worktop fixing

I specifically bought a piece without finish as I didn't want any potentially sticky finish. The underside won't have completely free air but it'll certainly get some air flow.

    Cupped worktop fixing

Yeah, I'm kicking myself for form over function. All along I'd planned on using an old length of chipboard laminate I've got lying around and then my eyes were drawn to a cheap bit of beech "that'll look great" I thought #-o

    Cupped worktop fixing

It is flipped over now, time to get on with something else for a couple of weeks. If I can get the cupping down to 1mm in the end I'll plane the top flat. Currently under the clamps the cupping is <0.5mm in the worst spot which I'd probably just live with.

    Cupped worktop fixing

Hi, I'm currently building a router table and to make life difficult for myself I've decided to use a piece of beech worktop for the table. After delivery of the worktop I unwrapped it and stored it on the workbench for a couple of weeks to acclimatise to the workshop. What I didn't think of at...

Drawing or painting under french polish

Brilliant, thanks for all the help. I think I'm going to have to buy some stringing (or thick veneer) as I don't currently have a bandsaw. As long as it's a contrasting colour though I don't really mind what timber it is.

Drawing or painting under french polish

I couldn't wait for proper tools to turn up so I went away and made myself a scratch awl. Many moons ago, when I used to post around these parts more often, a generous forum member sent me a few lengths of old bandsaw blade. Turns out they were 1mm thick so perfect for what I need. I initially...

That looks really good. A simple solution to the problem as well.

Drawing or painting under french polish

Looks like I'm going to be learning some new skills :-) I've made a fair number of things but most of what I've built so far has been, shall we say, functional or perhaps robust. I think I can work accurately enough though. After much searching I eventually found a 1/4" to 1/8" collet adaptor...

Drawing or painting under french polish

Once I've got the grooves I'll probably try inlay initially as Custard suggested. If that doesn't work then something like oil paint or enamel will be the next on the list, probably black milliput (as suggested by Spacecadett). Out of interest anyone know where I could get a 1/8" to 1/4"...

Drawing or painting under french polish

I want to make sure I win :D . I think my router is probably a bit big for the job but I've been meaning to get a palm router for a while so this is a good excuse to splash out. Looks like circuit board end mills can be had cheaply on ebay and at 1.1mm they are pretty much the perfect size.

Drawing or painting under french polish

I hadn't really got that far yet. The bowls I'll make on the lathe. I'm making a standard sized board so I should be able to buy some stones. I'm also wondering about turning them but I'm not sure I'm up for turning 361 identical pieces :-)

Drawing or painting under french polish

I'd not really considered trying inlay. It's not something I've ever done and for some reason I'd assumed it would have to be quite wide, if I can find those tools in the UK though I think it's worth a shot. Thanks for all the suggestions so far, that's really given me some food for thought.

Drawing or painting under french polish

That's the stuff I was trying to remember, thanks. My only concern is getting the groves small enough and consistent. I think I'm going to have to have a couple of practice runs to find out what works best. That's a pain as I've got to get this project finished sooner rather than later. Is...

Reasonably narrow, 1mm would be good.
