    Your Favourite Tape Measure(s)

haha this is a classic UK Workshop thread. Sounds like there is little in it regarding tape measures. Let's have an argument about sharpening.

    Head torch recommendations?

Petzl are still the kings of headlamps. Not too many settings, which drives me nuts like with black diamond.

Damp Problem - I'm not sure what to do...

I'm always suspicious of the amount of work done to victorian/edwardian properties in order to combat "rising damp" and other kinds of damp issues. Theses properties were built by people who knew what they were doing and you can normally trace damp problems to something stupid being done by a...

Damp Problem - I'm not sure what to do...

I thought that might be it...but actually the boxed in section of soil pipe is next to that section. The problem is...there just isn't any way of doing this non destructively... i suppose lifting the tiles might be the cheapest and easiest thing to do first. I never liked them anyway hahaha...

Damp Problem - I'm not sure what to do...

Roof really looks fine on the lean to and the pointing also doesn't make any sense...the damp is definitely coming from the bottom, the wall is much drier at the top. I'll have another look at where the lean to joins the house, but i just don't think it makes sense. Perhaps the radiator pipes...

Damp Problem - I'm not sure what to do...

I'm sorry for asking a question like this on here...but i know there are some great experts on all things building and construction. Have a downstairs toilet which is a brick lean to which leads from the bathroom (part of the main house). There is a good extraction fan which is now running...

    Linseed Putty and Double glazing

To be honest they were £100 from a joinery shop on ebay about 7 years ago...so nothing majorly lost. They were painted using a decent exterior paint originally... can't remember which brand. They aren't currently bedded with linseed putty.

    Linseed Putty and Double glazing

I'll take the doors off one at a time and refinish them inside i think. Seems like the best idea. Thanks for all the advice on here. I will probably have more questions once i'm underway. Thanks.

    Linseed Putty and Double glazing

Can anyone advise what might be the best thing to do.... the doors are probably 7 years old, but sit in bright sunshine all day. as are south facing. They don't look very well for 7 years!

    Linseed Putty and Double glazing

The problem has got worse since i last had a look at the doors. Hmmm...not sure what to do now.

    Linseed Putty and Double glazing

Have a set of double doors that are timber but double glazed. The timber has slightly warped in the sun, and there is now a slight gap between the glazing and the timber. This has caused water to get into the wood and the paint has flaked/failed. I'd like to refinish them using linseed oil...

    Second hand Patio Gas cyclinders

Most places will just swap one for one - you don't need any paperwork. If you have an empty, they'll give you a full one without any further deposit. There is plenty of patio gas around at the moment, but it is almost impossible to open a new contract (e.g. get a new cylinder without handing...

I ended up provoking an old ankle injury so wasn't able to even get started on this in the end. Will have to wait until i'm back next year. Sorry to be a tease.

    Removing Ercol 'Golden Dawn' finish

Just remember that once you strip off the finish, you may well not be left with the perfect grain pattern you were looking for. Tables which were due to be stained were often made from bits of timber which weren't as perfect as the blonde ones were. You may even find some filled knots etc in my...

    Treehouse Fixing Ideas.

So i went down to my local "go ape" at the weekend and was fairly shocked to see that they don't even bother with any kind of wedges. The platforms are more or less all just wedged using two bits of threaded rebar as the pictures will show. The rules are that only 3 people are allowed on a...

Can you buy decent door furniture anymore?

It's a general culture of being "entrepreneurial." Every business of any scale now run by private equity firms, who buy and sell these businesses and strip them of their assets. They then employ management consultants and other overpaid halfwits to cut and cut and cut. Where as doing stuff like...

    Treehouse Fixing Ideas.

To be honest I don’t understand the difference between sinking threaded bar into a tree and using one of these fancy tree bolts. The idea that they are better because they somehow cause the tree to “seal” around them sounds like BS. Why can’t I achieve the same with a large penny washer?? I...
