Is this worth anything to anyone?

Nice find. Brilliant tool that I would not be without.

    What chainsaw.

In the UK the petrol Dolmar and Makita are the same just in different colours. Neither are Chinese junk. You pay more to buy them in orange and that's it.

    What chainsaw.

Honestly I think you will get what you pay for. Brother in law has a cheap saw and it does work but thats where any compliments from me end. It's badly balanced, poor chain break, bad chain tension system and a bit smokey in use. I know Mitox are reasonably well regarded for a Chinese built...

    corner cabinet

No idea what sort of thing you are after but this was a quick one I knocked up for our bathroom. Just birch ply with some cherry trim. 12mm ply on the back so just screw through this to the wall. The side pieces of cherry I left over width to scribe in as need be.

    Very Sad News

Oh that's so sad. I spent a year in his workshop back in 1988 and he was and remained so passionate about design, furniture and quality. Thoughts to his family and friends

Best method of making accurate bevels.

If it is part of a horn on a speaker would one side be invisible? Just wondering if you could kerf some veneered board to the curve. I am guessing this curve will be joined to some sides on the ends. The snag I see is you are building a wide board in solid wood that is going to want to expand...

    can you identify this wood?

Is was the top one of these that made me think maple
  8. Beau

    can you identify this wood?

As said ply for the lids and I would plump for maple for the sides with various stains

    Timber Moisture Meter

Why the difference between cabinet making and joinery? Never seen the problem with the pin type. I just cut boards down to approximate size and test the middle of the fresh cut ends. Then leave to settle before final planing. Mind you if I had pin less one I might well be a convert.

    Timber Moisture Meter

Protimeter make some nice moisture meters. I still have one that must be 20 years old and in regular use. Within a whisker when compared to oven drying tests.

    Second Hand/Old Socket Sets

Just a word of warning about the Halfords sets. Not had problems with the sockets but I was doing some work on the Felder and there is a nut you can only get on with a spanner. Using the Halfords 13mm and rounded the blasted nut. Never slipped off it just rounded over. Checked I had the 13mm...

    Drill presses again!

I have an old Clark the table is not flat and the quill has a small amount of play when extended. Now for most jobs neither of things matter but on occasion when needing precision they can be a pain. One way to partly nullify the play in the quill is a good quality self guiding bits ie brad...

    Seasoning firewood

When it's dry it's dry. There is no magic formula for this. Oak is slow but we happily dry oak in less than a year in the right environment. This is my take on Seasoning Firewood If your wanting to season logs the first thing to do is get it cut and split asap. The bark is fairly waterproof...

    Seasoning firewood

The supposed telltale signs are very misleading but often quoted. Put a wet log in the sun for a few days and you get end grain cracks but it's not remotely dry. In fact, they will show more cracks when part dry due to tension between the shrunken dry wood on the outer edge and the wet middle...

    which bandsaw

I keep a 12mm blade on most of the time. I have also found them perfectly good for resawing with and handy when you have some curves to cut as well. One of the problems with deep blades in general, is they tend to be thicker as well so not only are you cutting deep section but also a wide cut so...

    Bandsaw blades. (Dure-Edge?)

    1) Sadly not. Always had good service and good blades from them

    Fixing plywood to walls

I have used this stuff to fix ply to the inside of a lorry container as they didn't want to pierce the steel. Really very good. Hung loads of tools off it with no bother. Made sure the ply was sitting on the floor so the only load was pully outwards.

    Moisture meter buying advice

Yes, my old one is pin type Protimeter. Only recently noticed there was calibration gadget in the bag it lives in. Thought I had better check it and it was spot on. Not bad for a 15+-year-old moisture meter. Also compared it with oven drying tests and it was within 1-2%

Most used thing you have ever made.

First thought was these but then realised it's undoubtedly our front door as this is a working farm with folk in and out all day.

    sharpening kitchen knives

Used to use a regular serrated steel and it would get iron dust on it which had to have come from the knives. Sure it doesn't remove much but clearly some metal is removed. As I said earlier in the thread I diamond steel is my weapon of choice. Excepting I am removing metal each time but never...
