Ah well yes I can see you might one spare to dabble with :D

    dovetail and tenon saws

If you want to cut on the pull why not switch a Japanese saw? Pull saws are so narrow due to the steel only having to be strong enough under tension making cutting very easy.

    Outdoor notice board

Sundeala is fine if the notice board rain proof. I made this one for a local church many years back and there has been no problem with the Sundeala. Only complaint was a lady who said it was hard to push the pins into it :? Edit. Ask your supplier as this might have been classed as water...

Smart Meters. Anyone had one installed? Smart Thermostats?

If you just want to monitor what you are using there devices like this available http://www.theowl.com/ I can see the potential for smart meters. As things stand the grid has to cope with large fluctuation of energy use. A smart supply could turn on devices like washing machines and tumble...

    Number 7 vs Number 8

Yes sorry my post did come over like I am a grumpy old git just suggesting if spending lots of money on a fancy plane a slightly smaller one might prove a better investment as it is going to get more use in the long run. If one can afford to have all the sizes well all well and good :D

    Number 7 vs Number 8

Well yes if I was making boat masts all day I would agree but the OP sounds like a part timer making some furniture for the house. I long plane is very specialist and will more than likely sit of the shelves for a long long time between uses. For joining up boards I like to plane a very shallow...

    Number 7 vs Number 8

Can't see the need for anything that long. A 5 1/2 and carful use of a straight edge and you can plane as flat as need be for jointing up tables 6' or more. It's the biggest I own and have never needed a longer plane.

    Smoothing curves

I would agree on a spoke shave or compass plane for long shallow curves but tight ones like the OP has highlighted?

    Danish Oil

Fresh Danish thins it quite well if it's just thick and not solidifying. At least it does with Rustins Danish oil

    Flat grind circular saw blade

Are not all rip blades flat ground? My Felder one certainly is.

    Using sapwood?

The sapwood on some woods is fine to use while on others its very soft and porous so tricky to finish. Your example of ash is as far as I can tell not showing sap rather the heart known as olive ash and regular wood. The sap on ash is one of the ones that is totally usable. The other wood I like...

Whats the best 18 volt drill and impact driver.

What you doing talking sense on a thread like this. Going to ruin everyones fun :D

Whats the best 18 volt drill and impact driver.

I know I would not want to be without one in my tool kit. Used to be happy with my old 3 speed Dewalt drill driver for everything but an impact driver is another step up again for decent sized screws and coach screws. Far less chance of cam out with one and so much power for so little weight...

    Fly Tipping

We do have lots of taxes but there is not endless money in Government coffers. Sure they waste loads but we cant do much about that as it's always going to be that way IMO. At the end of the day extra money will have to come from somewhere. Seems fairer that the consumers pay and those that...

    Fly Tipping

Guess the only answer is to have disposal tax on all new goods to subsadise free disposal.

    log storage

Looks ideal but I would have it facing north as nothing splits logs like direct sunlight. I wouldn't cover the front as a bit of rain getting in from time to time will have little effect on the drying but a cover will stop air circulating possibly resulting in mouldy logs.

    Auger bit recommendations?

Had Sandvic bits in the past and they have held up well.

    Fly Tipping

In an ideal world would completely disagree with you. It is very unfair for everyone via taxes to subsidise those that create the waste. Loads of the waste I see fly tipped is household waste from refits and old flat pack furniture which probably worked fine just was not todays style. Hate our...
