    Warco Pillar Drills?

There is a floor standing Startright Mercury on Ebay now. I would second all those recommending a quality second hand machine. I still have a cheap Chinese machine and I get by but always have a look a fancy looking new machines when passing. Been in Axminster and I dont think I have ever found...

    an unusual problem

I would go for a high quality epoxy like West System. The plain West resin has a low viscosity so leaves a very thin glue line and gets deep into the pours of the wood plus its gap filling ability if things don't go together perfectly.

    Sqare squares

Hi Chris. I would have sworn my Moore and Wrights were still perfectly straight and square but on close inspection there is some visible hollowing on the outside of the blade of my most used small square. Never had any visible shaving come of from marking knives but clearly been worn. Not...

Advice please on first Band Saw purchase.

The reason I think the blade was walking is the flex of the frame. It will run true with a smaller blade but not a larger one and the only explanation I could see was flex. It also affected the alignment of the guides. Think I measured it once but too long ago to remember details. Cant help with...

Advice please on first Band Saw purchase.

Sorry to be so disparaging about a saw you have. I am probably making the Griggio sound worse than it was. It's partly related to expectation based on money spent. My first saw was the Kity 613 which for £500 took all I ever through at it. Very strong frame but basic guides but it could be set...

    Chisel sharpening

If it's sharp and the back is flat it should not need raising at all IME. As per the video in my previous post.

    Chisel sharpening

I see my spelling is out as usual I am talking about pairing. Had a quick search on youtube and this best explains best why I would look to have flat backed chisels https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LM-uQZUyraE Trying to do work like this with a chisel with a belly I would have thought would be...

    Chisel sharpening

Never understood how you can pare properly with a bellied chisel. Love to see a demo Jacob Flat back all the way here. Never had problems keeping it that way during subsequent sharpening on some water stones which occasionally get dressed flat. Plenty of good advise already been given on how to...

Advice please on first Band Saw purchase.

The blade ran fairly well but not perfectly aligned from top to bottom. You would expect a machine of that price to run well though. The edge on the tyres were and remained pretty crisp but I only had it for a few years. Cant honestly remember much about the sawdust trace but it did have...

    Heating a draughty garage?

If your main concern is rust and you are not too worried about staying warm I would line the walls with plastic sheeting as best you can and put a dehumidifier in there. My old workshop was a barn and money was tight. I screwed 2x1 roofing battens to the walls and stapled up plastic sheet. Then...

Advice please on first Band Saw purchase.

The argument I have heard against setting the blade in the middle of a non crowned wheel is the set on the inside of the blade can get lessened due the continued pressure agains the wheel. Not that I have tried it just was advised against it.

Advice please on first Band Saw purchase.

From my experience of a few bandsaws and reading between the lines from comments on here it depends on the design of the bandsaw and if the wheels have a crown or not. If no crown it can run with the teeth just off the front edge of the wheel. Far more convenient as no need to adjust the blades...

Anyone made a jig to sharpen Felder disposable planer knifes

Thanks. Yes I have seen them but if I remember rightly they protrude too far down the face of the cutter for the Felder. Due to the blades being so thin the blade support comes very close to the edge of blade. Not tried one though and it might work. I have been a dimwit as I have found a jig in...

Anyone made a jig to sharpen Felder disposable planer knifes

Ah thats different to what I have been doing. What I did is put tape over 3/4 of a long diamond stone and guiding it off the infeed table while holding the block and rotating until the blade presses against the diamond stone. Then sliding stone along the length of blade. Will give your way a...

Anyone made a jig to sharpen Felder disposable planer knifes

Thanks Peter. Yes I have already done that as best I can but tricky to remove much steel with blades still in the block. Very easy to end up with the diamond stone marking the block.

    ROOFING EAVES DETAIL

It also keeps rodents out  I did not initially fit a mesh and got woken to the sound of gnawing. Mice had gone up above the Tyvec and were chewing at god knows what. I had to remove all the guttering and barge boarding to fit a mesh.

    ROOFING EAVES DETAIL

With just 4" of sheep's wool insulation how are you going to meet regs or do you not need to? I dont know anything about peg tiles as we had slates but my understanding for the counter batten was first to aid air circulation but secondly to stop any water that does find it's way in from pooling...
