What are the most difficult woods?

Never worked any horrors. Teak was brutal to the planer knifes and getting a decent finish on Wenge was tricky. Lignum vitae is the toughest wood I have used but only making mouths for wooden planes with it so not the most complicated job in the world.

    Freesat

We had Sky for a year and ditched it. Thought I would just use the Sky box for freesat but it was pretty useless and didnt seem to work right so went for the Humax. Pretty good but once in a while it crashes and needs turning off and on again but normally only happens at start up. That and...

Your opinion in using Threatend/Endangered woods?

Not sure about this myself. What are all the leaders supposed to do? Bet if they made the choices we need for our environment they would be out of power before they knew what had happened. So UK you can only have one child each, you cant fly abroad, you should only eat local food etc. Can you...

    Now I need a new cordless drill/driver.

Why not try to get it fixed? Had a few repairs done over the years on small machines and they have all proved good value by comparison with replacement. Presuming the blue Bosch didn't come cheap.

    Testing moisture content

25% is a tad high but not far off what it could go up to in this weather. This table is pretty handy https://www.woodworkerssource.com/shop/mois.html

Your opinion in using Threatend/Endangered woods?

Utter rubbish. You cant absolve responsibility with an argument that weak. Anyway there are plenty of pros using greater quantities on here anyway. It may be a drop in the ocean but the ocean is made up of lots of tiny drops.

    Steam bending Large timber

Have to agree with above having seen the picture. One other thing though is it does look the most stable design for a speaker stand unless what we are looking at is upside down :?

Your opinion in using Threatend/Endangered woods?

I went to a great talk on this subject hosted by David Savage some years back. Both sides put forward fantastic cases but to honest I left none the wiser. It was a classic chicken or egg argument. Personally I stopped using exotics apart from what I had in stock and I only use these for details...

    Steam bending Large timber

Epoxy or slow set PU work fine for large glue ups. If you use epoxy just clean off the squeeze out when green to make life easier. If 3" is too daunting to do in on I cant see why you cant build it up in stages 2 or 3 stages. I helped next doors 16year old make a laminated CD rack that was 4x1...

    Steam bending Large timber

I would laminate. At 3" thick presuming relatively thin laminates you should have minimal spring back unlike steam bending where there are so many variables. Also for acoustic use laminations should be more "dead" due to negating any defects in the wood. I may have missed it but how tight is...

Advise on breaking down rough sawn timber

A circular saw is going to be your best bet. Whether you go for a tracksaw arrangement I cant say but you will need a fair bit of power for ripping down a 3" board. As Mike says it's not difficult to just run a circular saw against a straight edge gives you more options on saws. I know some...

    Any boat builders/restorers out there?

Mind you cabin sole's are often teak with holly inlay so maybe my argument does not stand haha Edit. Reading through Robbins price lists I see this on page 9 http://www.robbins.co.uk/pdf/marine_pricelist.pdf "we can veneer any type of board with any type of species! - please ask us for a quote! "

    Any boat builders/restorers out there?

Robbins used to be about as good as you could get. Cherry on marine ply seems an odd choice though. My understanding or proper marine ply is it's made of boil proof glues and uses durable veneers all the way through. I dont think cherry is classed as durable.

When is a tree past its "use by date"?

Yes often had beech go quite evenly brown very quickly but it's not long after that it rots. Beech will be less that perfect after just a few months. In fact that goes for most of the whiter woods. I would hunt out any oak he has as that does not rot or stain quickly. Down side to oak is it does...

When is a tree past its "use by date"?

Pretty open ended question. I live in a pretty wet part of the country (Dartmoor) and sell logs for a living these days. I buy in wood in the round much as you describe just smaller diameter or more knotty so not suitable for milling. I dont leave any species in the round for more than a year...
