The legs are beech. oxalic acid or rustins 2 part bleach should do the trick. You might have to do it a few times. Cheers Andrew

    Bleaching wood

Thanks for reminding me of the name for oxalic acid. Used it close to 50 years ago to bleach the pine panel in my lounge room. Very efficient, and found a supplier here in Norway who sells it at a fair price.

    Any plumbers in the house?

Cheers, baldkev. Not the thing to use if you're a tad clumsy, then!

Black stains after stripping oak table - any suggestions?

...the legs might not have been oak but another wood. Especially because the top and the stretchers cleaned up so perfectly. I will try the Oxalic acid when it arrives and if that doesn't work then I'll Have a go with the Rustins, that said, the Liberon wood bleach didn't touch it. Thanks again.

    Water staining on cedar cladding?

Thanks for the replies. I know the consensus is leave it but I'm a little OCD unfortunately and it will continue to bug me. The oxalic acid seems like best option so far but I do have one other thought.... Could it be that my pre-sanding has taken care of the original water staining but...

Black stains after stripping oak table - any suggestions?

Ok, oxalic needs warm to hot water for the best results. Leave it 10 mins and then rinse or wipe with fresh water to neutralise the acid. Best to wipe peroxide with water too, probably a similar 10 minute gap

Black stains after stripping oak table - any suggestions?

I agree with the dye comments.... If it were bacteria in the grain or weathering it could be taken out using oxalic acid. You could try that, but if its dye, which i agree it most likely is, oxalic will have no effect. The other thing which can work to revive timber colour is hydrogen...

Thanks for the reply. baldkev. I have ordered some of the Oxalic acic crystals and will give it a try. In the meantime I have some 9% hydrogen peroxide and I will try that too.

Kiln dried scaffold boards gone mouldy?

...skin garage etc? I would prioritise getting the stickered and dry them out ( heat, dehumidifier etc ) and then go buy yourself some oxalic acid. Once dry and lets hope they dont cup/ twist / bow , mix a tablespoon of oxalic with a mug of hot water, liberally paint on and hopefully it'll...

Advice on how to remove "sharpie" writing on a guitar case please?

that reminds me - peroxide bleach and what's sold here (but probably not there) as a dollar store cleaner called "awesome" are both good at dealing with ink. The former will fade it (maybe not as fast as liked) and the latter for some reason is excellent at things like dykem spills and markers...

...and then put on a clear coat, youd need to scrape off the varnish, then decide on the next move... i.e sand it back, restain, or try oxalic acid to see if it brings it back..... but youd need to do a small test patch to see if the oxalic works with the stain. I dont have experience with...

    Refurbish advice.

Like doug said, its a fight to keep them looking new. But if you want to bring them up again, buy some oxalic acid on ebay, do a first c9at with it and it shoukd be fairly obvious where theres still any original finish, which you can then scrape or sand off. Ive recently used sadolin water...

Built a coat rack and struggling with finish...

Depending on how much hassle you are looking for... one approach that could help with the uneven colouration on the wood is to bleach it first with oxalic acid. May help reduce the dark areas. However, you could likely pick up a a few offcuts of oak for less than the price of the treatment/stain.

    Repair oak water stain?

Hi, a couple of options spring to mind.... 1, apply water everywhere  2 oxalic acid..... The water option may not give a good / consistent appearance, but its a low impact test, in that you arent changing the feel of the surface of the wood. The oxalic acid ( rhubarb ) will basically...

    Oak tannin stains?

Oxalic Acid crystals are widely available. AG Woodcare are vg in my experience Oxalic Acid Crystals. It may not work on all your staining but quite a bit of it looks like iron staining and oxalic is definitely the way to go for that. Jim

    Bleaching wood

...asked here on UK Workshop about wood bleach back in June this year as I was interested in bleaching oak. The recommendation was to try Oxalic acid crystals and a two pack bleach from Fiddes. Neither of which I've got round to trying yet. Here are some links...

    Preparing timber

Ahhh. Does that work with the tanin reaction on oak? Ive had success with oxalic acid removing staining on oak. In the same way, citric acid is fantastic for rust removal Most of my work has been 2nd fix, kitchens and built-ins, with the occasional roof thrown in, so i havent had to contend...
