interested in your experiences paying for tradespeople

This is an interesting thread. All the would be "customers" are saying they don't know how to get good trades folks in to do work and on the whole have had a lot of bad experiences. Then those in the trades are saying there are a lot of a-hole customers who should be avoided at all costs :lol...

interested in your experiences paying for tradespeople

I also hate getting in trades. Renovating our house I see all the bodges that previous plumbers, electricians and joiners have made (I know it was the trades that did this as the previous owners were allergic to tools!). The only trade we have had to get in was an electrician and despite getting...

Trying linseed paint - £141.68 for 1 litre

We ended up going with Oricalcum who seem to be UK suppliers for Ottosson Fargmakeri in Sweden.

Trying linseed paint - £141.68 for 1 litre

OK. So we just bit the bullet and ordered three litres of linseed paint, colour matched to "The Bosses" favourite colour. This is for all our exterior windows and doors which I will be stripping, repairing and finishing in the summer. However, we have a new door to paint asap so I was wondering...

    3(ish) chairs

I really like these, especially the stool. From the pictures I really like the high back but I would have to reserve final judgement until I sat in it! I also think the flaws in the chair seat of the last one add a lot of character.

    Double glazing supplier required

I have used Cruikshanks glazing in Leven to replace misting panes. From memory two medium sized panes was about £90 fitted or fifty if you just got the panel (the chap that came out to do ours even showed me how to do it). We have wooden windows but don't see why it would be any harder for upvc.

Has the forum been hacked ?

I think it looks fine. No big spaces that some are complaining of and the windowis resized so that only the text area is visible. I always use adblocker so the intrusive adverts never bother me.

A Picture Heavy & Probably Too Descriptive Staked Bench

That looks brilliant. I've been wanting to build one of these since ADB was published. If only I could get our house renovations out the way I could get round to it!

    Project Burnout

I know how you feel. We have been at house renovations for the past two years now and probably only half way done. Doesn't help that project creep has also kicked in. I think I am going to be busy for the next 3 years! Lucky I mostly enjoy it and do get the odd weekend off! But I do have my down...

    Kitchen and utility refit WIP

Looking forward to the stainless steel counters. We are planning a large island unit with a stainless steel top. One thing I don't understand is the grades of SS as some types seem to get marked very easily. Is there a standard for kitchen use?

    Electric piano stand/enclosure

FIL was the church organist until a few years ago and knows how to bang the keys so anything I made had to be sturdy! The thing that made me sweat the most in the design stages was deciding the finished height of the keys and the depth of the front rail as I know this can really affect how it plays.

    Electric piano stand/enclosure

Ah. didn't realise. It seems to work for me. Although since the demise of photobucket there are more and more new posts whose images I cannot see. I guess the forum software handles all the new sources slightly differently. Oh. And thanks for the compliment :D

    Electric piano stand/enclosure

So, on with the show. I thought I had taken lots of pictures when building but apparently not. Sorry if things jump about a bit. The first step was marking out all the joinery and making all the mortices, followed by tapering the legs. This meant making a tapering jig. It worked but the hold...

    Electric piano stand/enclosure

Bugbear. Not sure what to say. Are you just suggesting I go and buy one? dzj - I guess judging whether a piece of wood is good or not is all part of the skill. All three legs came out of the same piece of wood and two of them are absolutely fine and one only has a fine shake. I guess I should...

    Electric piano stand/enclosure

Sorry for the lack of updates. Turning the house from a building site to something we could host Christmas in took longer than I ever thought possible. Before I continue with the wip I was hoping for some emergency advice. The side panels / leg assembly has been glued up for 4-5 weeks and had...

    Electric piano stand/enclosure

For my FILs 70th in September we bought him an electric piano/organ. My wife wasn't entirely happy as it was just a standard plastic box type keyboard and didn't really fit in with the rest of his furniture. I was therefore "commissioned" to make a stand/enclosure for it. A bit nervous because...

Notes on Scottish Wood @ Oakley

Yes. I am a hobby woodworker! I have done both - placing an order by e-mail/phone I got some green larch sawn for an outdoor project. I recently went and hand picked some oak boards. Not sure. I have always gone to the yard No. E-mail and phone. They have a show room of prepared timber which...

Trying linseed paint - £141.68 for 1 litre

I have no idea what went wrong - it was the weathershield system and I followed the instructions to the letter. It took me nearly a full summer to get all our windows done. I think when I complained about it at the time someone mentioned that they had moved from an oil to a water based...

    Design for a shaving horse

I like that. I had plans for a folding shave horse somewhere - you could put it away a bit like an ironing board, which I was always tempted to make. But if I could combine the design you posted so I could have a saw bench, shave horse and spoon mule all in one I might just be able to fit it...

Trying linseed paint - £141.68 for 1 litre

After an awful result with Dulux on our windows (lasted less than 2 years before needing completely redone) we have decided to go down the linseed paint route - mainly due to comments on this site. After lots of searching we are using a company called Oricalcum https://www.linseedpaint.com/ Not...
