Forums and magazines: a blurred line

Nick, waiting for the latest issue to come out (BW35), but on trying to purchase BW22 I keep getting an error. I see that F&C has just made a case in point. Just bought their latest mag online and see that Rob's mask cabinet has just been published. I really enjoyed reading the WIP here; do I...

Forums and magazines: a blurred line

I cannot say I have ever noticed it in BW either! btw I'm glad you have made the jump to digital - means I cannot be given a row by my fairer half for all the magazines lying about! H.

Forums and magazines: a blurred line

I guess the key word here is "mention" - that is fine as it starts to introduce a newcommer to the great woodworking community that is online. However there have been quite a few forum entries that suddenly appear as full blown articles in various magazines. You end up paying for something that...

Forums and magazines: a blurred line

Is slightly off topic but interesting nonetheless. No need to post a pdf, this was an online rant: http://www.popularwoodworking.com/woodworking-blogs/editors-blog/codswallop

Forums and magazines: a blurred line

I'm starting to wonder if woodworking magazines are a waste of time, or if the magazines (or contributors) don't think we read forums or vice versa. I've seen quite a few wips or finished pieces on this site and others. They are all very nice but then there is some kind of comment that goes...

    Coupling two extractors

Blue collar woodworking talked about this recently. You can put the extractors in series but they said that you have to be careful that the first motor is not "overcharged" and therefore a fire risk. They monitored how much power the motors were drawing to ensure that the motors were not likely...

Woodwork book for beginners: hand tools only

As far as I can tell Paul's courses are £10/month. There is no minimum term so if you don't like it you can just cancel. You should also check out his youtube channel as he goes through a whole series on how to build a workbench. Will give you more idea on if you like his teaching style and...

Woodwork book for beginners: hand tools only

I have been very interested in Paul Sellers web courses https://woodworkingmasterclasses.com/ I like his ethos of only needing a few tools and everything he does is by hand. His online course is no more expensive than an evening class. The only reason I have not signed up is that I was given a...

Do I need a new motor for my table saw?

Which is why I was worried about the motor! I've ordered the blade now so I will rule that out before moving on.

Do I need a new motor for my table saw?

Thanks for the replies. It isn't the capacitor as I replaced this when trouble-shooting the initial motor problem. I will try getting a decent rip blade and see if that makes a difference. Thanks for the tip-off re cutting solutions - their prices seem very reasonable. H.

Do I need a new motor for my table saw?

My table saw is a Record TSPP250. Lots I like, lots I do not like but I picked it up VERY cheap a couple of years ago and it has done me proud. Except in one area - it will not rip! Even 45 mm pine is a struggle, never mind hard woods. It will cross cut the thickest timber you put in front of it...

    Folding kitchen bookrest

I really like that =D> I had lots of offcuts from a previous project that I thought were destined for the fire but I know what I am doing now. When is Mothers day this year :-k H.

    Author Recommendations

When my wife was on maternity leave, as she had no free hands but a lot time sitting looking/feeding/cuddling the little one, she used to rent audio books from a couple of companies. They were like netflix or lovefilm but for audiobooks. I seem to remember for about £10/month you could have 5...

planer blade sharpening in Fife / Dundee

Thanks very much. I will give them a try. H.

planer blade sharpening in Fife / Dundee

Can any of our Fife / Dundee contingent tell me where they get their planer blades sharpened? After quite a big project and some very hard unidentified timber I now have a nice hollow in the middle of my new planer blades  . I was trying to be careful to use the whole width of the...

    Timber Suppliers in East Lothian

I have bought green hardwoods from http://www.scottishwood.co.uk/. They are near Dunfermline and they have always given me good service. They also do kiln dried wood but I have never tried it. H.

    Traditional Toolchest Build

That does look very nice. Read the same book during my summer holidays in the south of France and picked up a hand stitched rasp at a flea market for 50 cents! As I have been refining my woodworking skills (ie not making a balls-up every time I touch a piece of wood) I find myself doing more...

    British Woodworking Tablesaw safety

I always thought that if beyond the capacity of the table saw that large sheet goods should be broken down using a circular saw and guide rail?

    British Woodworking Tablesaw safety

I've just been browsing issue 33 of British woodworking. Given all that has been said about American tablesaw safety (which I totally agree with) I felt compelled to bring up the apparent bad practise in the picture at the top of page 19 of the above issue. Now the picture may be misleading but...

    Glue for blockwork flooring

So, the wood has been acclimatising in the house for a few weeks and I am ready to get it to the final dimensions. I decided to use the SOUDAFLEX 40FC to stick it down and just wondered how much I would likely need - the area is about 6 square metres.
