    Gluing stars!

Hi All, SWMBO decided it would be a good idea to do some "upcycling" and use a pallet we had to make some Christmas stars as presents. Guess who has to implement said idea! It was all going well until I started thinking about gluing them up. Here is what I have: They fit nicely but I cannot...

So Matthias Wendel just got married!

I'd just like to give big congrats to Matthias Wendel as he got married last weekend! In case you don't know Matthias is an engineer who has a great website http://woodgears.ca/ It also now makes sense why so many of his recent projects were of a domestic, or ring making nature :D My only...

Wood working projects for children to do

Paul Sellers does have some blogs on projects for children. They all use a coping saw, spoke shave, maybe a drill. I think the projects are like spatulas, small chopping boards etc. My 6 yo favourite "project" is to get a block of wood and hammer nails into it until he has produced a "robot"...

    positioning 6mm bandsaw blade

Solved my own problem. The blade tension was too high. Just slackened it off a bit and got it within a couple of mins!

    positioning 6mm bandsaw blade

I have never had any problems centring my 12 mm bandsaw blades. I've recently bought a 6mm blade from tuffsaws and I cannot get it centred! Or at least I cannot get it to stay centred. So is the blade better positioned toward the front or the back of the wheel? Thanks in advance, H.

    Making Garage doors Advice please

I should have also added that I made some garage doors using the torison box technique. 12mm ply on outside 9mm on inside, sandwiched with a 50 mm frame that was infilled with 50 mm celotex. I then planted a frame on the outside. I made these 4 years ago and has lasted well but there is now some...

    Making Garage doors Advice please

From "Doormaking and Window Making" - the old publication relaunched by lost art press the only thing to note is that the bottom of brace goes to the hinge side and the top of the brace should only be against the top rail and not touch the non-hinged stile. The reason it gives for this is that...

Steve's workshop - Painting the outside walls

Hi Steve, Am I imagining things or did you pack the bottom of the back wall with insulation, then take it all out and pack the top?! I am comparing the 2nd and 4th pictures you posted above? I thought it was just me that changes my mind and does everything at least twice! Great progress...

    Workbench Build

Great looking bench. I built similar but mine is only 5ft and I sometimes find it a bit short. One question. Why have the vice at the right hand side? Are you left handed?

    English Woodworker wellbeing

Now that Nick is thankfully back on a recovery my next worry is the silence from Helen and Richard over at English Woodworker. Their blog stopped in June and they were clear there were some health problems. I just hope they are both doing well and we will hear from them soon. H.

    parquet floor from reclaimed oak

I made a basket weave floor from reclaimed flooring that I got from freecycle. It took a while to prep and acclimatise the wood then cut it up and lay it but after nearly 2 years it is still looking good. The thickness of the blocks I made came out at about 14 mm I think. [/URL]

Oak log store - now finished

What a cunning cheat to make us avoid all the mistakes! Seriously, it looks great and I plan something just a little larger next summer when we plan to install a new wood burner. Do you use the Paul Seller method of chopping mortices? This is my preferred method but tried it at a wood working...

    calculating u-values for doors

Recently put in an application to building control (Scotland FWIW). One aspect they want clarification on is U-values of new doors we want to put in. These comprise an outer storm door and an inner <50% glazed inner door. These are non-standard sized doors I was planning on making myself. The...

    Carpenter bees in France

Calling for help from French forum members, My father in law has a holiday / retirement house in the Provence area of France. One of the covered patio areas which is part of the house has two old oak beams that has recently (in the last 2 months, since his last visit) been infested with what I...

Steve's workshop - Painting the outside walls

We know your reasons but I am itching to say leave that open top row as windows! Otherwise - looking palatial :-) H.

Steve's workshop - Painting the outside walls

Looking great! It will feel like a proper structure when you get a lid on! Did I miss why there is no sarking boards, plywood or other going onto the trusses before the membrane etc? At an intuitive level only I always thought this really strengthened the structure. Also, how do you walk on the...

    Extend or rebuild shed?

If you are planning on staying in your property for the forseeable I would sell your existing kit shed and build your own to suit exactly what you want. FWIW I bought my shed second hand and modified it and extended it and in the end I have made a lot of compromises that I would not otherwise...

    Dust extraction accessories

Thanks Richard. Your technique looks like it could be adapted to a number of situations. I guess I am just surprised that it is all such a hodge-podge. There should be no need for me to make my own fittings. You would think there would be some kind of standardised fittings that would make this...
