Welcome! The previous post tells you all you want to know: "2 coats of Jacobean Dark Oak stain"

    Noah's Ark

That is really nice. Do you haave any pics of how you carved the small animals? I have always wanted to try carving things like that but wouldn't know where to start! H.

    BAS 316G Bandsaw setup

I had never had any trouble setting 12 mm blades on my BAS 316G. First time I tried setting 6 mm blades I had similar problems to you with even gentle pressure causing the blade to move off the crown of the tyre. Eventually I just eased off slightly on the tension and all was sorted. I do find...

    Workshop space

I don't know of any community workshops - the closest is Alloa! There is a turning club that might be able to point you in the right direction: http://www.taywood.org/ Let us know if you find anything. H.

Steve's workshop - Painting the outside walls

I think 700 mm is correct for the depth of the water pipe (however, I found my mains water pipe buried - by professionals - at about 200)!

Steve's workshop - Painting the outside walls

Hi Steve, I hate digging trenches! If I remember water pipe and cat 5 are meant to be buried a certain distance from swa (300mm?). Also if swa is in a conduit (ie plastic pipe) then it is down rated (I assume because it cannot dissipate heat as easily into surrounding soil). Maybe worth looking...

    Trend pockethole screws and Kreg

Hi All, Does anyone know if the Trend screws are compatible with the Kreg system? I need some new 32mm screws and I can pick up what seem to be the equivalent Trend ones at screwfix. Cheers, H

    Selling one off pieces

That is really nice work. I like it! If you could get that down to around £250 - 300 by batching the build I think you would have good chance in my neck of the woods. Cheers, H.

    plug cutters

Hi, Can anyone recommend a decent brand of plug cutter that will do a decent job in oak please? They are for concealing screws so I guess a 9 - 12 mm would be the best size. I see screwfix do a Trend make - does anyone use these? As if you didn't know the silverline ones I had sitting in the...

    Finish for shelving

Thanks again for the advice Richard. The wood prep should be okay. I have planes and cabinet scrapers. The one thing I struggle with there is sharpening the scrapers - I can do it but I don't seem to be very consistent so it takes me a while. I am thinking of doing this project as a WIP so keep...

    Finish for shelving

Thanks for all the advice. I think I will go for a water based finish as my wife will not be patient enough to let oils cure! Do I need to prep the oak in any way apart from sanding through the grits (minimally on the veneer!)? For instance would I need to use some kind of pore filler? Apart...

    Finish for shelving

Hi All, I must admit that finishing is the one thing that still baffles me with woodworking and I tend to just grab the danish or linseed oil on most projects I have done. I am about to embark on building alcove shelves in my living room. These will be oak veneered mdf with solid oak lipping...

Steve's workshop - Painting the outside walls

Great progress Steve! I think I am missing something. Can't you get the doors and windows in. Then with the help of a heater you can paint to your heart's content? H.

New Garden Workshop - Finished at last

I'm glad it is all coming together - looks like it will be a good space. As a heads-up - Did you know that as soon as you have water and electric going into an outbuilding then Building Regs need to be informed? It makes things a bit more tricky in terms of equi-potential bonding (I think that...

    anyone got a camvac

I'm sure in the letter I got from CamVac saying that Record Power had bought them suggested that all the staff were being kept on and intimated that the machines would still be made in the UK. But for how long? H.

    Gluing stars!

Hi All, Just thought I'd let you know that masking tape worked. I did it in three sections, gluing 2 points together then join those and finally slot the last point into place: The joint is strong enough - I dropped one by accident and it was the wood that split, no where near a glue joint...

    Gluing stars!

Hi All, Thanks for all the ideas. I've just tried the tape method - which went OK but I have 5 of these so I am also going to try making a board with wedges too. Dick - The stars are flat. It must be an optical illusion or my lucky choice of timbers next to each other. I should have said that...

    Gluing stars!

Maybe I am making it too complicated. I just like things to last! I did see Pauls tricks of tape but those were on tiny, very nicely finished wood. But it might be enough :-k

    Gluing stars!

Hmm. I thought about CA but will it be strong enough? (or is that a silly question! - I've never used CA on wood before). Plus I would need to buy activator. I like the idea of making a block frame and wedges. Only problem I forsee is that these stars (5 in total) are all slightly different...
