    Framed, ledge and brace gates

Nice looking gate mseries. Andy - I notice that the student has sketched through mortice and wedged tenons on the stiles. I refrained from doing this on my gates as I wanted to minimise end-grain exposure. I think I will do stub tenons as I don't like the look of the notched braces. I must...

    Framed, ledge and brace gates

Hi All, I am making two separate garden gates of the style above. The gates are 1.8m high and approx 1m wide. I have finished all the mortice and tennon joinery and the next step is to fit the brace. I have been following the nice little book of "Doormaking and Window-making" released by...

Steve's workshop - Painting the outside walls

Ray sounds a bit like my dad. He just doesn't understand how people can't keep going, and going, and going, just like he can. He then gets frustrated! If it makes you feel any better I "finished" my shed early in 2011 and the driveway is still bare compacted earth that forms great big puddles...

Steve's workshop - Painting the outside walls

Steve's moved to the "dark web"

    Painting exterior woodwork

Good points Jacob. I will look into this a bit more and also see what BIG BOSS thinks as to the colour palettes.

    Painting exterior woodwork

I would consider Linseed oil on the new gates as I can paint them under shelter before I hang them but doesn't is take an age to dry and so not too compatible with the changeable Scottish weather? Happy to be proved wrong!

    Painting exterior woodwork

I need to refurbish my wooden double glazed windows and paint a couple of gates I have just made. I last did the windows in 2010 using a Dulux trade system. I followed their instructions to the letter on 19 windows taking me the best part of the summer working weekends. It was meant to last...

    making love in the workshop

And most people will not realise how much love has gone into that big LOVE!

    Woodworking ebooks - would you?

Steve, I accept that server charges etc are not be excluded (look at what Richard Maguire is up to at English Woodworker!) However, brain cogs are slowly churning..... There was a chap that used to write for PC Pro magazine that started a candlemaking business on the side. He used to write...

    Woodworking ebooks - would you?

Most woodworking e-books I have bought are only slightly cheaper than their "real" counterpart (ie $20 versus $25-30) but then there are no printing or distribution costs.

    Woodworking ebooks - would you?

I am 38 and I use my tablet for about 80% of woodwork related reading: magazines and books. I enjoy the Lost Art Press books and buy these as pdfs directly from their website. If I am heading off to the shed then I print out the section I am interested in.

    Durable timber

I have just been pricing timber for a couple of gates. PAR joinery grade redwood came in at £123. Sawn, seasoned larch came in at £270! I had really wanted to use the larch, and I know it would last longer, but the redwood gates will likely last 20 years if they are looked after and at prices...

Steve's workshop - Painting the outside walls

Steve, I hope some time in the next few days that the sun is shining when you first wake up and you take a look down the bottom of the garden and think "Wow. Did we really do all that?!" I have been there myself and really think that it is time you take a little break. You should be proud. It...

Carving waney edged timber... it's bowed :(

It seems to me that all the routing has released a lot of tension in the wood. As long as you haven't gone too deep I would be tempted to let it settle for a week or so and then attempt to flatten the top and bottom again.

    timber merchants with no saw

One of our local merchants is the same. They mostly deal with trade so no real need for them to cut anything. I always take my saw with me but if I forget they handly have a nice blunt saw to help you! The funny thing is they are not allowed to cut anything but once you have they are more than...

    Cleaning Cast-Iron vintage radiators

Will shot blasting not risk damaging the seals between each of the sections? I was wondering about cleaning the inside but they have just been removed from an old hospital that had them working just 2 weeks ago. From the quick look I've had they don't appear too bad inside. If they are going to...

    Cleaning Cast-Iron vintage radiators

SWIMBO has just appeared with 10 or so cast iron radiators and wants them cleaned up, repainted and installed. They look in decent shape. The paint is pretty much intact on most of them but flaking in places and there doesn't yet appear to be any rust. Do the folks that do all the Wadkin...

    Nick Gibbs accident and recovery

I feel the same Nick. I am glad you didn't sell BW. It is without doubt the best and most genuine British woodworking magazine and oozes it from every pore. It is your magazine and would feel so different without you holding the helm. Please concentrate on getting better. If British Woodworking...

    Rutlands lathe

Hi All, I see Rutlands has a lathe on special offer and wondered if it is any good? I haven't done any turning before but have been considering getting something for a while and this would fit the budget. Cheers, H.

Small oak bookcase by hand tools

Very nice work. How did you manage to annoy your neighbour when it is all handwork only?!
