    Demi lune table

It's been a while since I updated this, but I'm pleased to say I've finished the table. After lots of umming and ahhing, I decided to go with a stain and French polish finish. I wasn't sure about it but decided that an oiled oak finish would look a bit modern for our house. Because I wasn't...

    Enamel paint on wood

Thanks J-G. That's lovely work. That would be a great way of doing it, but beyond my ability in the time I have available!

    Enamel paint on wood

I'm not painting the whole box, only the lad's initials!

    Enamel paint on wood

Thanks. I’m doing some French polishing at the moment on a side table I’m making and I agree that shellac is good stuff. However, I’m pretty set on Osmo for the tool box because it will be more durable. I think shellac would stop the wood absorbing the oil.

    Enamel paint on wood

Thanks Droogs. That makes sense. I can see the enamel "leaching" into the wood otherwise.

    Enamel paint on wood

As mentioned in another thread, I'm making a box for a godson of mine. I'm thinking of it as a toolbox but he can put whatever he likes in it. Pic of the WIP below. I want to paint his initials on it. I have some enamel paint which I think will be suitable. My question is whether I should...

    Old 99 Loco

It looks beautifully made. How many miles of track will you be making for it...?

Pop rivets and pneumatic rivet guns

My air riveter looks very similar to that Clarke one. It had no trouble doing steel rivets (the hole for which was around 4mm). They weren't stainless but I'd be surprised if it couldn't do them.

    Transformations

I used the same technique for the art desk I made (WIP on here somewhere), the main difference being that the apron continued under the drawer so I had to rip it into three pieces before cross cutting the drawer. I wasn't trying to make mine invisible, I just wanted the drawer to have a similar...

Pop rivets and pneumatic rivet guns

Rivet guns (including the pneumatic variety) come with different mandrels for the different sizes of rivets. If it has the right mandrel then it should work fine. I built a car a few years ago and did hundreds of rivets. The pneumatic rivet gun was a god send!

    Demi lune table

Thanks Andy. I hadn't thought about it like that. The most likely location for the table will suit a pale finish I think. I've read on another thread that Osmo with wax will achieve a decent glossy finish. I wonder if it matters which Osmo I use. I have a nearly full tin of satin so would...

Child's toolbox design - wood movement

I've made a start. I've decided on a simply chest type construction (probably with a breadboard lid). I'm making it from oak but it's neither of the bog nor quarter sawn variety...

    Demi lune table

I think the beaded legs with their extra taper, together with a lip under the apron have made a big difference to the look of the table. I'm much happier with it (excuse the mess): Still not sure about the finish. I'll do some test pieces with a stain and French polish, but I'm leaning...

Child's toolbox design - wood movement

You made a beautiful job of that.

Child's toolbox design - wood movement

Agreed, and I have some, but that won't do for this project (although I probably will use it for the base)!

Child's toolbox design - wood movement

That's what I thought. I can see lots of issues with this sort of design. The other possibility is a small chest. I think I might go down that route instead.

Child's toolbox design - wood movement

I'm contemplating making a tool box for a godson. I was thinking something along these lines (possibly without the drawers). I'd like to dovetail the corners, but it wouldn't have end grain for the end pieces and I'd also worry about expansion when the grain of the side and end pieces run in...

    Demi lune table

I did some experimentation with making a scratch stock yesterday evening. It worked OK, but I found it a little too easy to slip and mess it up as evidenced by the photo below (the right side was OK, but the left was a write off): I suspect I could get a decent result with more practice, but...

    The heat!

I'm afraid I don't know anything about mine. We bought it in an antique/junk shop about 10 years ago. Here are a couple of other pictures. I'm afraid we have abused it a bit. In addition to its current position in front of a south facing window, we used it as a coffee table in a conservatory...

    Multi-lane roundabouts

There are some strange roundabouts out there. There's one off junction 6 of the M3 into Basingstoke which is one of those "hamburger" roundabouts - some lanes go straight through the roundabout and others go around. If you're coming off the M3 and want to turn right onto the A30, you need to...
