Is it time to buy a new tool... router table / table saw / spindle moulder?

Yes, that's not too far and it's a nice looking machine. However, I've got an order in to Axminster for one of the spiral p/t machines which I'm hoping might arrive in a couple of weeks or so. The little Clarke bench top machine I've got has been OK but it's a bit of pain to use and so I've...

Is it time to buy a new tool... router table / table saw / spindle moulder?

Nice. I normally come over several times a year but haven't been at all this year because of the covid situation. I'm missing the place dearly, but it's great that you can go about life on the Island as normal. I really hope it stays that way for you. It's worth speaking to Axminster as they...

Is it time to buy a new tool... router table / table saw / spindle moulder?

Where in the Channel Islands are you weirdbeardmt? I hail from Guernsey. All my family are still there but I've been in the UK since uni days, and in Hampshire for the past 17 years or so.

Found in a farmyard - is it worth fixing?!

How about turning it into a bandsaw mill...?

    Not shooting straight!

You might want to watch Rob Cosman's video on YouTube about making a shooting board. He makes the point that if you have a slight "valley" in the part of the board the plane runs on, the plane has a tendency to tip away to the right. The problem is that the plane is supported at its ends but...

    Highlighting engraving in lead

There are some very good ideas here (other than Bob's "take it down to the scrap yard" o_O).

    Imperial vs Metric

Mike, you're a very bad man. I had a look at this last night and now I'm completely addicted...

    Highlighting engraving in lead

There are different ways of measuring value than with pound notes. It'll hang on the wall of the house it came off and if we ever leave the house it can stay there.

    Highlighting engraving in lead

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll have a play on a bit of scrap.

    Highlighting engraving in lead

Thanks Mike. Does the patination oil darken the lead a bit? Would the idea be to let it pool a bit in the engraving?

    Highlighting engraving in lead

A bit random this, and not really wood related, but I'm sure the UKW collective will have some bright ideas for me... We had our house re-roofed around 18 months ago. We and the roofers found quite a few places where previous roofers had scratched their names and the date into the lead. Being...

    Re-tapping a stripped 5/16" hole

Yes, helicoil should be a good solution. They work really well and you often end up with a stronger thread than the original.

Thoughts for my first wood project: side table design

First table or not, the table looks great Dr Al. Great job.

    Line painter restoration

My father in-law has given me this old line painter. Unfortunately it was damaged in a garage fire a few years ago. I vaguely remember using it to mark out a badminton court many years ago and it's clear how the wheels and the wheel "scraper" go together. I'm a bit less clear on how the...

Can I cut a door in half?

Through mortise and tenon joints on the edges. It looks as though the door has been hung the other way at some point as I can see filler where the hinges used to be.

Can I cut a door in half?

Thanks. Interestingly the panels aren't very well made. Some of them a very slightly raised, but one doesn't seem to be and one of them is off centre. I like it though!

Can I cut a door in half?

Thanks Mike You're probably right. However, it's a "proper" stile and rail door (maybe Victorian?) which is why I'd quite like to keep it. I could even up the stiles by trimming a bit off the outsides and adding a strip to the middle. I suppose I could give it a try and if it looks awful...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

I know! The plane tote was hard enough. I don't need to rush to do that as I can probably fit most of the tools in by just putting them on the shelves at the moment. Chisel racks will probably be the first to do.

Can I cut a door in half?

We're getting our bathroom sorted. Currently it has a door (into a small bedroom/dressing room) which we don't use. We were just going to take the door out and cover up the hole, but we now think we would like to turn the space into a bathroom cupboard (the wall is about 18" deep so it would...
