Rob Cosman describes a good shooting board on the Tube. Quite posh with dovetails and everything. It's also useful! Check it out. John

Hi Keith I escaped in 1954 and spent 10 years in the RN. You don't become an officer talking like a Brummie so I had to modify my accent. In the end I never became an officer because my Dad was just a building worker. All the same I never fully retained my Brummie accent, although you could...

New to carpentry, few questions on first project.

There's a lot to learn even if you are only going to make firewood. Some species of timber burn better than others and for longer. Some species spit and throw out hot cinders onto your carpet. Some species are fit for nothing else but burning. That there is a lot to learn about timber is an...

    Making Beech worktops.

I tried using Cascamite in the summer, a couple of years ago. Used it on some Western Red Cedar. I mixed it properly. It just didn't bond. Maybe it was past its use by date? Don't think so though. Never ever had problems with Cascamite before. I think it was the timber which probably has...

    Trying to join a forum

I have been trying to join the Birmingham History Forum. I am clearly now a member, but I can't post anything until I receive a confirmation email from the site. I have been trying now for two weeks; but nothing. I know these things can take a few days sometimes, but this is ridiculous. I can't...

I've been in love with Dolly Parton my whole life.

If she fell on her face the make-up would cushion the fall. You might think I don't like her, but not so. Sher can really sing! John

    Not quite there

If I use a circular saw to reduce planks to rough length I always use something to guide the cut. At the moment it's a large speed square clamped to the board. Or a wooden version for the widest planks. Pro carpenters don't seem to bother not even cutting panels. They probably laugh at me. But...

    Your Cars

Pre World War II Armstrong Siddeley limousine. It had a preselector gearbox and was painted battleship Grey with 'pussers' shipside Grey. This was in the 1950s at HMS Vernon. A shipmate of mine had bought the vehicle to restore. I don't think he ever did thst, but anyway we had fun driving this...

Don't worry Britton.. You won't be 'trying your hand' for long. Once this bug bites it bites forever. Best of luck John

    Plug cutters

Roland. Just realised what you meant here. Plug cutters won't do what you mentioned. They aren't designed for that. I suppose they could manage, bùt I use a suitable diameter of mild steel tube, file some teeth on one end and chuck it in a drill stand. That works as a one time tool to remove...

    Plug cutters

Thanks Vinn. If i want end grain to feature I use a dowel or square section. If i want a plug I use a plug cutter of the right size. Plug cutters are not really meant to extricate buried nails or screws . I think you'd agree? John

    Plug cutters

I cut long plugs by hand. I either start with an oversized dowel or square. Whatever I have to hand. I also have my own way of dealing with buried screws. I wanted to use plugged-over screws for construction and decided to update my plug cutter. Cheers John .
