Brad Pitt divorce - do we really care?

Who cares? The couple met on Film set when they were both already hitched. Never seen any of Angelina Jolie's work. I have watched some of Brad Pitt's films, and they were okay; but then I don't have to suffer his reported BO and halitosis! Maybe that's the problem. Suddenly the fame and...

    Garage Doors

Western Red Cedar, Oak, or Pressure treated soft wood. These are my usual preferences. I would choose Cedar first, if I replaced my up and over door. Medium priced, and weather resistant. My garage faces due south, so I'd probably give them some preservative every couple of years, to stop...

    Sheer Strength

I would look somewhere like Screwfix, and use some 'turbo-screw' coach-screws, instead of ordinary screws. Alternatively, coach-bolts might serve. Either way, you'll have peace of mind. Counter-bore so the coach-screw heads are sunken out of the way. These screws hold my Chop-saw to an MDF...

    Edge joining scaffold boards

Scaffold boards used to be top quality pine (Pitch-pine) and a good full 2" thick. They have to be best quality even now, given that lives depend on them. So its good timber hopefully. I jointed 6ft scaffold boards for a friend, who wanted a heavy , pine table for his kitchen-diner. I used...

What's the point of dovetail joints?

For economy and speed, the multiple drawers in my kitchen were joined with a 'cookie-cutter' Trend dovetail jig. They are still good, and are way better than some of the modern mechanical fixings you get from IKEA and similar houses! Just saying! (hammer)

Workbench top with CNC milled holes for bench dogs

Someone is struggling here. It isn't 'more accurate' to point out the actual misspelled word; it's just more specific. :D Whether you point out the actual mistake or not, you still made it! I'm off. Off-threading it isn't my hobby!   Is it too early for :ho2 , or...

Workbench top with CNC milled holes for bench dogs

The word 'very' is the Grammarians' pet hate. It's a redundant word; especially when used before the word 'unique', as I have heard it. We know what unique means, so why bother to qualify it with very? A thing or person is either unique or not. Same goes for accurate. Whether generally or...

Workbench top with CNC milled holes for bench dogs

Incredibly accurate? No such thing really is there? The holes are either accurate, or they're not! Just me being pedantic Oak! :D I don't think you'd be likely to achieve the required accuracy using the method you outline though. There's a video on the 'Tube' outlining a method of...

Workbench top with CNC milled holes for bench dogs

That's a point, although if I used Formica I wouldn't treat the top as sacrificial! :D

Workbench top with CNC milled holes for bench dogs

Tufnol would be great, but 18mm thickness is pineappling expensive! If you fancy watery eyes, check here! http://www.theplasticshop.co.uk/tufnol- ... thick.html    Couldn't you just buy a sheet of birch ply and face it both sides with Formica? Then cut your top...

What's the point of dovetail joints?

DW Agree; to a point. But sometimes price is a watchword. (Usually when building for myself! ) So I don't say 'cheap'! I use the words 'inexpensive', or 'economy'! :D Cheers John

What's the point of dovetail joints?

You beat me to it Matt. When I did use use box joints on a drawer, (I used ply for economy) I sank a 1.5 " screw down through the fingers from top and bottom. Last I heard the drawers were still in one piece.

My new folding workbench - I'm after some feedback!

Hi Coachy, My compliments on the design and construction of your bench. I use an MFT for most of my machine woodwork. (When I can find time to do any). It's okay-ish but somewhat shaky, and I want to make a 'rolling-bench' to suit it. I don't think that needs any plans mind as it's a...

    Sorry, a sharpening question...

Tormek make a planer-knife jig, to fit their wet-stone. But it does leave the knives hollow ground. The knives on my Sedgwick are flat ground. I had a spare set of knives when I bought the machine, and change them as necessary , shipping the dull blades out for professional grinding. The main...

What did you do in your workshop today ?

Prepared the top for a new computer desk. (That is, I bought a piece of laminated pine, and put it in the shop. ) While I was at it, I decided it was okay to assume my planer had dried out, after its dousing when the water tank overflowed. With much trepidation, I switched it...

What did I do wrong? (Wood movement)

Another solution is to rip each piece again, so you have eight lengths. It means jointing all over again and twice as many joints, but it sometimes works. Narrower pieces make planing out cupping much easier, if you don't mind the narrow board pattern afterwards. The best solution, next time...

Paint for garage doors made from floorboards

That's 'cos Jacob is old-fashioned. I agree with him for once though. The one problem is linseed-paint takes longer to dry. It's flexible though because of the linseed, so it's swings and roundabouts. It does give the nicest finish too; IMHO anyhow. It's virtually the same as 'hartists' use in...
