    Just fell off my stairlift!

Thank you folks. It was fortunate I wasn't moving at the time. I was just getting into the chair and fastening the safety strap, when the stanchion weld gave way, and the seat pitched forwards against the balustrade in front of me. Worst part of it was extricating myself from the seat, because...

    Just fell off my stairlift!

Hi folks; This relates to woodwork in a roundabout way; because of what the Community Nurse said after my stair-lift collapsed beneath me on Sunday. I.e., a man of my age should have been hospitalised, with at least a fracture somewhere! All I got were bruised, swollen knees, (artificial...

I am getting shot of some woodwork stuff.

Under a window is probably the best for an amateur shop. If you have a window of course. I like to work looking out of the garage, so no one coming in can startle me. So mine is against the wall, and up against the buttress, where the garage enters the main house. No movement or vibration at...

I am getting shot of some woodwork stuff.

No bench. Just the vice-hardware. My bench is an old carpenter's bench and at 30" wide it's a bit of a beast to handle. I am thinking of replacing it, with a 'Little John', if I can still get one! I will just leave my old one on the drive, around Nov 5th this year! Lol!

Martin is no longer able to use his Hegner

Martin, I can empathise with you. I had a couple of TIA (mini-strokes) last year. Not quite so serious, but it has affected my guitar playing somewhat, and woodworking has to be done sitting down, in case I topple. Wishing you all the best and I hope things do improve for you. John

I am getting shot of some woodwork stuff.

Hi There. Smalmaleki I am sorry about the delay. I had an accident at home I'm afraid. My stair lift fell apart, with me strapped in it. Fortunately I wasn't moving so I just crashed into the balustrade and bruised me knees! Yes the vice hardware is still available. So let me know if you...

I am getting shot of some woodwork stuff.

Steve, I thought it was just me losing height! According to my service records, I was 6 feet and 1/4" in 1964. Now the NHS says I am 5'6". Back trouble, I was told, can have this effect. Don't know what else to blame it on. As for woodworm, I don't think we have a defence other than Cedar...

OK Steve. Not a problem. Take care John (hammer) BTW, Do you have space for yet another bench!

I am getting shot of some woodwork stuff.

I have a message that Steve Maskery has replied. I can see nothing here at all, but my original post! Is a puzzlement! John

I am getting shot of some woodwork stuff.

Hi folks, I am starting to wind down and I have stuff I bought new, and never got around to fixing. or using. For instance two sets of vice ironmongery I got from Axminster. I think York brand, and believe one was a face vice like the one Frank Klauz fitted to his big bench. (I think it's a...

Best joinery technique for making box shelf from oak worktop

I think Mikeg's idea of through M&Ts, would be strong and look well. With a nice chamfered up-stand above the top; maybe angled wedges? But here I go; making a straightforward design, into a work of over-engineered fantasy. I have form for that! But yes, I do like the idea; albeit it would mean...

I am wearying of this 'updated' format on the Forum

Thanks Chris. I did get it eventually, but for sure, at one point, something was not working properly. It might be Windows 7 of course, as it's getting to be a bit slow in any case! But I am not going to upgrade 'til I have to. At my age it's hardly worth the bother! :D Cheers John (hammer)

I am wearying of this 'updated' format on the Forum

Thank you folks. I tried clicking on the name, but just a message came up that I wasn't authorised to post on the forum, despite the fact I was logged in! Anyhow it's been solved now and I found the button for PMs. Thanks again everyone John

    Warping oak

No Problem Mike, My son had left the chisel out in the yard; it started to rain, so he gave it a quick wipe over and left it in the utility room. It's not that bad, but I'll have to give it some resuscitation . I don't do much thee days, but I am still trying to keep the shop tidy! Some...

I am wearying of this 'updated' format on the Forum

Folks: How on earth do I tell someone I have what he is seeking, if I can't reply in the wanted section? I can see no way to send a private message, unless someone sends me one! There must be a way of doing it, but where has the designer of the new Forum hidden the link? Is it a test? Is it...

    Warping oak

FOR MIKEG... For some reason I can't reply to your post in the WANTED section. I can't send a PM either. I think this new 'format' for the Forum is throwing me! I have a 1-1/2 Stanley Blue Chip that is lying around getting rusty! Some 'helpers' used it and left it in my utility room! I'll fix...

Best joinery technique for making box shelf from oak worktop

Hi Bikerbear, Welcome to the forum. I would suggest dovetails as per MikeG. But the thickness; I always found dovetailing much over 20mm thick material to be; not a walk in the park. Even now after all this time. Dovetails should look fine of course, and I hope you choose them. In your...

Vices - Fitting a Record Bench Vice

I agree with Paul Sellers's bench as a good standard; I just don't like an apron on a bench. It reminds me of a workshop where I was once employed; I didn't much like the place; or was it the hidebound work's manager? I do rather like this bench as a starter, designed with power...

    Taking up smoking...

Hi Suffolkboy; I really don't know why smoked bacon is saltier than non-smoked. I just know that in all my years of eating bacon, I never tasted smoked bacon that wasn't salty; more so than 'plain' bacon, as we say in Brum. Perhaps it's just me; although I thought the idea of smoking food was...

    Taking up smoking...

You should be all right for oak chippings from this Forum! Love my breakfast kippers; thrice a week! Yum-yum! Mind you, kippers are the only smoked food I like. Can't see the point in making bacon any saltier, and as for smoking pork.. shudderingly awful prospect! FWIW. I have taken to...
