    Double or single glaze door?

Too subtle obviously! John Cut & Pasted from my post: Okay then; I Googled Trombe Walls and now I probably know as much about them as does Jacob. No offence Jacob; hope your SOH is still intact old man!

Does anyone work from a Chris Shwarz type Dutch Toolchest?

I am in need of a tool chest. Ideally I'd like an English style chest, but to fit my hand tools it would be pretty large, and unless I mounted it on a stand, I'd suffer from all the bending over it. Also a lot of work in the making; which I'd enjoy of course, but how long would it take me, at...

I am getting shot of some woodwork stuff.

Thanks Sam: Yes, it's Parkinson's and Dementia that Jean has. I looked after her for almost six years; four of them on my jack. Then the local Council were 'kind' enough to provide some carers four times daily. Until Jean went off her legs 30 months ago. That was when the Council lost...

    Double or single glaze door?

Still can't take a little joke then Jacob? I am aware of the heat absorption and transference properties of metal. That's why all my saucepans have plastic or wooden handles. I still thank my garage door for keeping my shop drier than most amateur shops. As I said, were I to change it, I would...

I am getting shot of some woodwork stuff.

So true Lons. Well I did get my local council to fit a toilet seat attachment; so I can get back up much easier. Much cheaper than a higher, replacement 'throne'! It wasn't climbing the stairs that was my 'downfall'. It was the stair-lift problem. I was just getting into the seat...

    Double or single glaze door?

I also agree with Mike on cost effectiveness, and I paraphrase Oscar Wilde, from his 'Lady Windermere's Fan'. Price as compared to Value. I just leave my heating on low, all through winter. (More or less) It costs I guess, but it's value to me, as keeps me cosy in my old age. Cheers John

    Double or single glaze door?

Hope it's OK to 'resurrect' this thread: I hadn't a clue about 'Trombe walls', so I Googled. https://builditsolar.com/Projects/Space ... arWall.htm I don't know much more than I read there , but I think I have a kind of Trombe wall servicing my work shop. I call it an up and over, metal...

    Box locks

I used box locks on writing slopes. Never had a problem with them. I got mine from Martins in Hockley, Brum, but they went mainstream online; that is if they are still in business. John

I am getting shot of some woodwork stuff.

Thanks Bob, On Friday, I spoke to the rep from DWP. Sounded a right miserable basket; seemed extremely suspicious as to why I wanted to be the appointee for Jean's finances. Well he'll get his answer when he meets her next week! I shall certainly 'watch my step' in future when going up...

I am getting shot of some woodwork stuff.

Hi Saeid They are both front vices. Just three parts to them; The screw, the travelling handle and the keeper that forces the jaws to move. Simple to fit, and the screws should generate all the holding you need. Next weekend will be fine; Saturday the best, as I visit my wife on Sundays. (As...

    Cabinet makers books

You don't HAVE to use T&G, but at least make the back from framed panels for a good job. natural wood panels should not be glued in of course, or they will likely split over time! John (hammer)

I am getting shot of some woodwork stuff.

Hi Smalmaleki, I am sorry I've had to take so long over this. I have been liaising with DPWP over my wife's care home fees; a b it of a job really! Fortunately now the matter is being sorted. It's just a matter of time. If you look at the link I left in my post, (Axminster) you can see what...

Some pine, some glue a bit of chain and a box of screws.

This is what I have to resort to. Just to store a few planks off the ground. Timber is 100mm x 18mm and the job takes up the footprint of a B&D Workmate. (Approx.) I made two. Would you like to see the other one? Take another look at this one! Regards John PS it isn't crooked...

    Cabinet makers books

Hi Rik, +1 for Joyce If it isn't in there then it's probably not worth knowing. 8) As for the T&G back: The back is likely to be the largest expanse of timber in a project like a book case or wardrobe. If natural wood then it is quite likely to move. That's why you would be wise to coat the...

Best method of making accurate bevels.

Thanks Mike. I truly didn't realise that. Never done work like that before or since. It just seemed the most common-sense way to me. I always believed I was a 'born' woodworker'! Yeah, right! My 'Mentor' ( mentioned below) used to say, 'Never, as long as you have a hole under...

Best method of making accurate bevels.

Simon. The only time I ever did any 'coopered' work, was a bow-fronted pine corner cupboard for a dealer. To make the doors, I built an accurate 'former' of MDF, clamped it to my bench, and got out a Record No. 6. I hadn't a clue about coopering, but I could make a good rubbed joint. So...

    Shed/Greenhouse

Jon, My first shop was built onto the footprint of a derelict greenhouse. (It would have been a great little greenhouse when new.) I built the shop nine feet square outside dimensions, with 9 inch solid walls (Although the top half was mostly glass. Roofed with corrugated iron in lean-to...

I am getting shot of some woodwork stuff.

Hi Folks.. I had no idea this thread had extended so much. Anyhow to report! 8) I am reasonably fine, but the fall had more effect on me than I thought. Most of it is mental to be honest; after 35 years in jobs where I couldn't waste time being a wuss, I am surprised at being suddenly...

I need a hinge and don't know what it is called...

Step-ladder hinge or paste-board hinge But it will be galvanised mind. I bought two pairs when I was designing an outdoor 'A' frame clothes drier for the yard. But illness and so on got in the way. (Getting old isn't for wimps! :D )

Tool cabinet build - hInge opinions?

Just a thought; and not criticism. I've always been wary of this type of tool cabinet, weight being the main worry. However you square it, you still need the same wall space to accommodate the lids when they are open. I realise that you don't actually need to open the doors right back, to...
