    Bog oak treasure trove.

Just one reasonably sized board, shakes and all, would do me a treat Mike. Thanks for the heads up! John (hammer)

    How square is your square

Firstly: I am not a 'new' woodworker. I started with a kids' tool kit in the mid 1940s. My first real lessons/training began in 1950. In 1954 I started in the trade, but then got lured by the RN at 15-1/2. Only to find myself eventually working in the shipwrights' shop! Just sweeping up; but...

    How square is your square

With shiny tools (Saws and chisels) it's possible to use reflection on the tool. You can SEE that the angle is right and tight! 'Woodworkers' eye'. Ok for building chicken runs! John (hammer)

    Drill press options

Thank you trevanion. I will have a sort through to find that thread. I envisage using a drill press for woodwork also so I will need something robust especially with large diameter bits. I don't usually deal with eBay but just this once I could have a look. Thanks again John (hammer)

Best flat/matt paint for underworks of pine bench.

Isn't that the stuff they use for shabby chic furniture? Also the stuff the Shakers used a lot of. I don't want to make shabby chic! I just cannot bring myself to wittingly damage a piece of woodwork I have just finished . I will leave that to the person who hopefully buys the item . All...

    Drill press options

Looking around my shop I find I already have most of the basic metalworking tools. (Including a beat up, but still working 1940s Myford M4 Lathe) What I don't have is a decent drill-press. My small bench morticer is convertible for drilling, but it has only one speed. So if I decided to buy a...

    How square is your square

Get a mitre trimmer. Then you can cut rough and trim to exact angle. BTW 90 degrees is also an angle! All you need to set the mitre trimmer is an accurate square! Errmmm! (hammer) John

Want a small bit of steel Where to get it?

Yes Pete. I was just thinking about the fact they supply a wide range of metals in small quantities. My choice was always a firm called Reeves (ISTR) . It would be a help to know what the project is though. John (hammer)

Best flat/matt paint for underworks of pine bench.

Thanks Mike. I'll go to my old 'stomping ground' in Hockley. Bound to source it there. Any thing from an elephant to a safety pin! John (hammer)

Best flat/matt paint for underworks of pine bench.

Hi folks I have some SY pine I need to use up. I thought of trying to catch 'passing trade' by leaving projects on view on my drive. First project a pine bench with painted legs and aprons. Never used this technique, so has any one any suggestions for suitable finishes for the legs. I want a...

    Just had a visitor

Thanks Lons. This fellow (ess) was easily 18 to 20 inçhes high with wicked orange eyes. To get a decent photo I would have needed to open the nets, which would have startled the bird So I contented myself with watching. :) John

Want a small bit of steel Where to get it?

There used to be firms catering for Model Engineers who supplied small amounts of all sorts. You can find loads of stuff in the gutters in Birmingham B6! I will try to be more helpful though and see if I can find one of the Model suppliers addresses. https://maccmodels.co.uk/...

    Just had a visitor

I have a raptor using my Japanese Maple as a feeding post. I keep finding the remains of pigeons (Usually just feathers) on top of my big 'mound' Acer. Not seen the bird yet, but I suspect a sparrowhawk; although I did see a buzzard around last year. Do buzzards take pigeons? I don't like...

    How square is your square

Saeid. If my squares pass the straight edge test and two drawn lines are parallel then I am happy. If not l find a better square or correct with judicious filing . With long combination squares check at two or three places along the blade.. A new square should be much better than the example...

    Double or single glaze door?

I am having vertical blinds fitted for Easter! But I still want to retain the nets, for privacy, and the curtains for warmth. Am I just shy, or do I have something to hide? Dr Bob.... Your links to the 'tube =D> =D> =D> John PS... It's a bit late for me, but for the younger element on...

    Double or single glaze door?

All I know is that if I leave my heating on all the time my house is always warm and the winter bill is manageable. If I employ the timer there are times when I shiver. I think the climate is always changing, has always changed and will always change. Co2 is a naturally occurring gas and the...

    How square is your square

I think with adjustable squares there is often play in yhe channel and the tightening wedge. This gets noticeable over time. My Rabones don't seem to suffer and I use the one to set up my circular saw. NP! Regards. John

    How square is your square

I have a plain Moore & Wright 6 inch engineers' square which I had given me by a retired cabinet maker in the 1960s. It has needed a light filing from time to time. I love it when doing small jobs and it is reliable still with a comforting heavy handle. Not for sale! Regards John
