Got that Saeid. Thanks again John

    Some questions on Japanese Chisels.

I have always been a little mystified over Japanese chisels. So I wonder if the Eastern tool enthusiasts on the forum could help. First off; what does Oire nomi mean? Do Japanese chisels have special designs for specific jobs; i.e morticing, dovetailing and paring. Using a hammer with...

    How square is your square

Hi Saeid. I never found the private message you said you left me. I don't know why but perhaps you could try again. I've been limping around the house lately due to an infected leg ulcer but it's clearing up now so I might be able to get into the shop for some more productive time. Thanks again...

Parameters for a small joinery bench.

That's a nice mini bench Rafe. I was wondering about something similar, when I was planning my new 'Roubo' style bench. That was just before my wife fell ill, almost eight years ago now, and very little woodwork has been done in that time. I still have my old bench, of course; 6 feet long...

    Suspect tax scam

Nothing so exotic I'm afraid. Just a retired real police officer from before the days Common Purpose was unheard of and we would never dream of walking about in a hi-vis jacket In those days we were tall enough to be noticed above the crowd; and when being progressive meant getting promoted...

    Suspect tax scam

So far I have never spoken to anyone whom I suspect of trying to scam. As long as I have my marbles I know exactly what I'm going to say if such a situation should arise. I will just inform them quite truthfully of what I once did for a living and that I recognise a scam when I hear it . I'll...

Best flat/matt paint for underworks of pine bench.

Thanks Jacob. The furniture isn't intended to be left outside though I quite agree with regard to the weathering properties of linseed oil paint. I do have some leftover from the days before I had UPVC window frames fitted. I think the colour was called Brown spice! Incidentally I have to re...

    Dovetail joint

You don't seem to have forgotten very much since you left school in the 70s(?) The joint looks quite neat to me. Neater then this 19th century example! FWIW. Hand cut dovetails always look better, but a dovetail is a dovetail. For strength and longevity, it matters not how they are cut...

We now have Screwfix/Greggs/Toolstation next to each other

Greggs? The Bakers? Like Phil, I have enough timber around my waistline! A lot less than in October last, but still someway to go! John (hammer)

    Suspect tax scam

Many thanks AES, I appreciate your concerns. I am aware of the obvious scams such as my IS, asking me for details because they have 'lost' my bank details. As I pay my IS via direct Debit, I know when it's been paid, as I use online banking. So I consign such emails to the gash bin. I was more...

    the ukulele of density

You know, I think I will sell my Gibson... Nice work. If I find the pic of my mate's Castrol Oil tin guitar, I'll post it for interest sake! John (hammer)

    For those idle moments

Absolutely! I especially like his wardrobes. Looks like I'll have to tutor number one son to help me put a wardrobe in one corner of my bedroom! John (hammer)

    For those idle moments

Hi folks. I don't expect I am alone in enjoying woodwork oriented videos on YouTube. One fellow from up north; namely GID Joiner, has kept me entertained for the last couple of days . Have a look , especially if you are into site work such as wardrobes, garden gates etc. It's evident GID knows...

    Suspect tax scam

Thank you gents. As I suspected it is scam. I'm just going to delete the email. Is there any point in informing the Inland Revenue of this scam? Always try to help Inland Revenue as much as I can! Don't recall giving IR my email BTW. Thanks again. John (hammer)

    Suspect tax scam

Just had an email purporting to be from inland revenue. Telling me I am due a rebate of £309 I believe inland revenue do not inform us of rebates via email. Does anyone know if this is correct? As far as I know rebates are usually sent by mail in the form of an appropriate cheque. I have not...
