I'm getting taken away for a day or two ...

I found Slimbridge to be rather commercialised, on my second visit; compared to the first time I went. It was all rather faded and careworn. Maybe it's just me, but that was the general impression I got. John :(

    Enforced absence

Thanks for the support folks. I do appreciate the replies. Having thought on a little I need to concentrate on finishing the workbench I started before my 'normal world' came crashing around my ears! I wanted it to be the 'Roubo', but I think a more sensible starting point now will be Paul...

    Never lend tools!!

The only person to whom I ever loaned tools was a retired joiner who lived opposite. Infrequently though, because he had as many tools as I do, with the exception of sash cramps, which I frequently loaned him. Sadly he isn't with us any more, but he was a genuine, good mate. :D John (hammer)

    Enforced absence

Hi folks. I have been absent for a number of weeks now, due to a brush with Cellulitis; a nasty skin infection, which attacked the tissues surrounding my artificial knees, and lower legs; taking me off my feet completely. I am reliably informed it could have been far worse, but luckily I am...

    Tall plank dovetail

Whenever I have had to dovetail tall planks I place the board horizontally in the vice from the right-hand edge of the vice and at a slope. Then it's just a case of working from the side of the jaws, cutting the tails and keeping an eye on the marked lines so you make a neat job. It's a fiddle...

    Is this woodworm ?

Looks like the beetle I found in my shop once upon a time. I soon found the infected timber too; some poplar I had bought from tree fellers! (NPI) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KzDZPgS6eSA https://www.google.com/search?client=fi ... Wwc4m960n4 Good article about checking if woodworm is...

    Tenon & mortis

Welcome to the forum Parky... The domino is superior to a biscuit jointer. No contest; other than price, and also cost of the dominoes; although it's easy enough to make your own 'custard-creams'! A biscuit-jointer is quite adequate for lightweight doors mind. Five minutes work by hand...

Any knowledgeable Hi-Fi Buffs out there?

Thanks to everyone who has responded with advice. I know a 'home approval trial' would be a good idea, but really I just want speakers that give me a pleasant listening experience for Classics and Jazz, and Dire Straits and ABBa of course. I live in a detached house so worrying my neighbours...

I just bought something. Can you guess what it is

Bob. Something you have done without for a long time, and could probably always do without? Actually, I know the feeling. I just found some 'Trix' construction set units! John :D

Any knowledgeable Hi-Fi Buffs out there?

I like vinyl too. Problem is all mine are worn out. (85% of Django Reinhardt's recordings, according to the discography in De'Launey's book 'Django'. So I changed to CD. I still have a massive collection of 45s and cassette tapes. John

Any knowledgeable Hi-Fi Buffs out there?

Thanks everyone. To get me by I have hooked up two Peavey guitar amps for the stereo effect. There is ample range of adjustment for gain, treble and bass on these amps, and I can even hear Nelson Riddle's dais creaking! (unless it was a musician breaking wind!) I was pleasantly surprised at...

Any knowledgeable Hi-Fi Buffs out there?

Hi folks: I have just treated myself to a new Hi-Fi music centre; or I believed I had. I bought a Yamaha CRX-N470D Network CD Receiver. I think I must have looked at the wrong illustration, because on taking delivery it was obviously a speaker-less piece of kit. I have listened to it through...

    74 years ago today?

I think the powers that be are too busy forming a European army to start the next little lot of Wars; see if I'm not mistaken in about 20 years time. John

    Cedar Garden Bench Seat

Sounds like my good lady used to be. She made 500 concrete garden blocks when I was working away , for me to lay at the weekend when I got home. That was in the 80s and they're still there straight and true as ever. Where would we be without a good lady! John (hammer)

    Cedar Garden Bench Seat

Talking of glue; I wanted to build up 4 x 4s for table legs, using cedar. I used the new Cascamite, but discovered that the cedar didn't like it and it just pulled apart. I degreased' the timber with meths, but that wasn't entirely successful. So I reverted to exterior grade Evo-stick Resin W...

Hand Brace Drill as a Screwdriver

No definitely not Just saying that it's the extraordinary strength in my forearms and my powerful grip that does the trick. The extra length of the turnscrew however does help and allows me to stand a little further back from the wall and avoids my considerable belly...

Hand Brace Drill as a Screwdriver

Works well when you have to remove a stubborn slotted screw too. So does my 14" long turn-screw. I managed to find mine online, and it was the only tool I had that would remove the screws on some shelves I was dispensing with. Wouldn't be without it; or my brace and bits. :D John (hammer)

    Simple oak picture frame

Rob. Totally agree with what you said. The problem is I'm not overly familiar with millimetres and I normally make the difference a quarter inch. Which is the larger I don't know without looking at the rule! As it happens a member of the Art Group I belong to is an expert framer so the solution...

    Simple oak picture frame

Callum I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this but the bottom border of a mount board is usually about 4mm wider than the other three sides which are equal. It just gives a little bit of balance to the appearance of a mount in a frame. Just a tip. John

    Simple oak picture frame

Sharp eyes for attention to detail and sharp tools; proper sharp! Nicely done Callum. You have a reason to feel pleased with yourself. John
