    Sandpaper distressed wood finish

I just could never finish a piece of woodwork and then attack it with abrasives and/or metal chains. It is just akin to vandalism to me. The same people who think this is a good idea are often the people who throw out furniture merely because it's looking tired! If I am going it to invest time I...

Sous Vide Recipes. What are your best/favourite/proven uses? All suggestions welcome.

Indeed Bm. Although my Christmas lunch is now a Beef Wellington, for which I prefer a middle cut fillet. I lash out for enough fillet to make four individual, 'Wellingtons'. I freeze them down and they last me for special occasions. Par excellence! For which I thank my Lady wife who showed me...

Sous Vide Recipes. What are your best/favourite/proven uses? All suggestions welcome.

Most of my weekly budget for meat goes on ribeye steak. Tender, flavoursome and cooked medium rare, I think it's value for money. When I want a roast joint, I prefer lamb and pork. John

Suitable paint for kitchen cupboard doors.

I want to use a painted finish on cupboard doors in my kitchen. I don't have any spraying equipment, nor do I envisage getting any. Can anyone suggest a suitable paint for the purpose, to be applied by brush? TIA John

    My Strange Box

PE2 Dave I think you'll find it's the Iron Cross which looks like the Maltese Cross. Not an exact match but near enough. I believe the swastika which we know was used in the Far East, by various religious groups for whom it signified peace. It was displayed upright and not on the skew, as per...

Stainless screws or nails/pins for Western red Cedar slats?

I've always used sheradized fixings for cedarwood. Never had any problems. HTH. John

    The wonder of the domino

There are plenty of 'utility' style dining chairs still around and in good order. Now pushing 70-80 years. Most of these chairs were jointed with 3/8" dowels. If you like the style they are simple to repair/renovate and a single painted example looks well in a porch. John

Any ideas on the background of this old ruler?

That's what I like about this forum. You can learn something everyday. Hadn't got a clue about the Ell. Thanks Andy. Although I do remember seeing these rules fixed to countertops in tailors' workshops. Maybe they have been converted to metric these days! John

    Strong colour

First class work Bob. My kitchen is a mere 10 feet square, but I am settling for painted cupboards too. May I ask what paint you used, and is it sprayed on? John

    Newbie Alert.

DBT. Getting caught. Quite agree. The difference is, before cameras, all one needed to do was keep an eye on the rear view mirror. It was easy to read the word police, written in 'mirror writing"! John

    Building a timber rack?

Timber racks are fine if you have plenty of space in your shop. My timber has to be stored in the yard outback. I was going to make-up a Framed area in the yard using deck boards and some plastic sheeting for a cover. Last year's episode with with cellulitis put paid to that but it's still on...

    Repurposing a blunt file?

I taught myself to turn and and used Jeff Stokes and Frank Pain articles in 'The Woodworker'.. I made a couple of scrapers from old files that saw me through until I mastered the skew. And yes, heat treating the files was advised.. Never had any problems. Don't call myself a Turner mind and I...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Lovely tool chest. Nice workmanship and aesthetic finish. I think you'll find that this type of chest was usually made by an apprentice over the term of his indenture. It would be envisaged that the chest would be carried around the country as the 'journey man' looked for work. So a plinth at...

    Flu jab

Understood Bob no problem. I suppose I was referring to processed food. It wasn't my quote it was one I saw somewhere online and I thought it had something to say say.just off for a virtual one mile walk in front of my TV. My legs are beginning to seize again Cheers John

Bob. I said MAKES food; not harvests it. Ants appear to harvest only their natural food anyhow. I've been away from the forum for a good while. Nothing has changed much. I am also out of chitchat. John

    Another Joke

As far as I can see Rabbi can be written with one 'b' or two. Another Anglo-American/ism. This pesky app keeps auto correcting words it doesn't know. John
