    2 chip chop axe heads

I'm interested in the clean one Andy, can you post it?

    Sanding "spalted" beech/birch.

You're always going to struggle if you take a scraper to spalted timber, even a negative rake scraper is going to cause tear outs of the softer wood. Working delicately with a good sharp gouge can minimize this, but rarely will you have no blemishes. My own approach is to get as good a finish...

    Small box

    Nice job Derek.

    Box and Bowl

Thanks Derek and Rick. Alas, if you look at the bowl it has two pale marks at one end, I didn't notice this till later and it is the lacquer worn away by the edge of a polishing mop, I tried to effect a repair but new it was all but impossible, and the bowl just ended up worse, so I tidied it up...

    Box and Bowl

Thanks Chas, I agree, the colour really did bring out a lot of detail, I was very happy with that.

    Box and Bowl

Couple of new items. Natural edged Oak Bowl, small (4") coloured. Small Churn shaped box in Olive Ash.

    Rounded opening hollow form

True enough Derek, Like all things to do with artistic expression, there are always exceptions to the rule, it all depends on what outcome you want.

    Rounded opening hollow form

Nice Hollow form, good shape and nice to see some adventurous use of colour, even if it doesn't come through in the pic, the description showed the work. Feet are tricky things, I am often in two minds about having them or not, especially on bowls, they tend to be redundant on stuff like...

    Unknown wood

Not sure about Malcom's piece, are the lid and the bowl from the same "bush"? they look very different, the lid looks quite like Beechwood, the bowl has a sort of fruitwood look to it, but I can't think of a fruit bush timber. This little box though is home spalted beech (I put some logs in a...

    Unknown wood

Nice bowl by the way too! Should have said that at the start but I am always fascinated by guess the timber type posts! :)

    Unknown wood

Yes I would go with Beech too from that shot. In fact I am currently working on a small box with almost identical colouring, white spalt and unaffected timber, I'll post a pic up when I can.

    Unknown wood

Really need a detailed look at the grain to have any chance of a proper ID Derek.

    Hollow form

Nice item Derek, first time I have seen field Maple turned too, did you buy it or get it from a fell?

    Hawthorne Log

I started off with trimming the scraps off. Then I sawed the end off and mounted it in the lathe, using a two prong drive spur. A Shape already suggested itself that would maximise the wild nature of the grain around the roots and I started to rough this out, the spur drive jumped...

    Hawthorne Log

Thanks for your comment John, there were a few stones but mainly soil, as it is here I have already been at it with a power spray, so it's pretty clean, but you were correct of course to point out the inherent risk with such pieces. I too thought bowl, but did I do that? :) (I did with the top...

    Hawthorne Log

My son Richard found this Hawthorne tree, roots an'all, in a roadside hedge, first thoughts of course, once it is home, is what to do with it? What would you do? I have already done, and will post up the pics later, but I am interested in others ideas. More pics tomorrow!

    Lime

Doesn't look too thick to me, you need more room for warping when the timber is this distorted anyway, I would have made more of a curve to the outside shape perhaps and left an oversized dovetail on the base, but that's more of a personal preference, looks a nice piece of timber.

    Ash Bowl

I never even knew he had died! Such a shame, Ray's book "woodturning and design" was my very first turning book and it has been a constant guide ever since, I remember once handling one of his boxes at the Bristol Woodworker show, it was a masterpiece of turning, the lid fit was so precise I had...

    Selection of Boxes

Very nice boxes Derek, I especially like the spalted one with the inserted rim, classy!
