    Sectional vessel.

I agree Derek, design wise I can see quite an imbalance and the Bulb is definitely part of that, not it's presence as such, but it's shape for sure, it lacks grace, the vase bit above is a bit too heavy in the base and would have looked better if it narrowed down a lot more, again, it lacks a...

    Sectional vessel.

I finally got this completed today, it was a steep learning curve and though I am happy with it, there are a lot of errors in it, most unseen and due to the process rather than the turning, it was a tough cookie to turn and even tougher to photograph. It's 14" tall. Made from a Beech wood top...

    Checking on Elm logs

You can of course fill the split with something, Epoxy with a coloured powder, CA with same, or just dust, as long as it isn't too severe or affecting the overall structure, strength and safety of the item, sometimes you can cut a short bit off and then lose the split by reducing the diameter...

    Sycamore Vessel

That's a lovely piece, very nice indeed!

    Ash bowl

I need to get back into doing some videos again, I am working on a complex piece right now and thought yesterday "that was a wasted opportunity for a good vid" Space is the problem, that and the fact that I am really not tidy in the workshop!

    Ash bowl

Nice finish Derek, I like the dark green too!

    Using up the short bits.

This was made from a 9 x 2 inch Laburnum branch, something that would usually get used for either a small drawer knob or perhaps a finial, I thought I would have a bit of fun with it. Finished height is 4" and the ball is 40mm. All one piece.

Post a photo of the last thing you turned (!)

Actually what I want to do is more like your own field with different timbers providing the colour, like rosewood and ebony for the stems etc, I need to hone the technique though, I would be a bit narked if a nice length of cocobolo flew off the lathe in bits!

Thanks Chas, it's a bit of a theme ATM getting ready for some more complex stuff.

    Forstner bit set

I have the Axminster set and they are in the "OK" range, if you sharpen them, sharpening is best done with a small credit card diamond stone, they are cheap enough and a 600 grit does a good job. I run it a few times across the bevel and once or twice down the vertical section to remove the...

    Hollow forms and pot.

Thanks Derek and Chas! Always appreciate your views. Thanks too Pete, the first HF is about 8 inches wide and 4 inches high, the tall one is 12 inches tall and 5.5 inches wide.

    Haha, thanks Nev! :D

    Hollow forms and pot.

Couple of recently finished pieces, the Hollow forms were coloured with Chestnut Spirit stains and Lacquers. The Olive Ash sweet pot, I am not wildly happy about this one, the lid is a poor fit and ungainly in the size of the lid base component.

Turning Boxes - getting a well fitting lid

Type of timber has an effect too, Holly for example, while nice to turn, never seems to stop moving, I have had no Holly lids fit for more than a couple of weeks despite being indoors prior to turning etc. Ash on the other hand seems very stable. Allowing sufficient depth to form the join...

    Dry out Hawthorn wood

I've used quite a bit of Hawthorne over the years, Chas is right in saying it is prone to split, but less so than say Holly which can end up with so many internal splits it becomes unusable (if dried in the round that is). But saw Hawthorne in half and it generally dries pretty well and is very...
