    Need to Finish?

Shellac would both seal and provide a finish in one hit, plus if you prefer an non glossy look it is easy to knock the shine off with some fine wire wool, yet the seal will remain.

    What's that finishing system called?

If you check out the pdf that Chas linked to Rich, that shows the use of Chestnut's Acrylic lacquer combined with the Chestnut buffing system as a means to achieve a gloss, it doesn't tend to look plastic though unless you overdo the layers, I find 3 coats are usually adequate. I use that...

Hard wax oil? You can get a small can through Axminster now, Chestnut do it.

    Preseli Laburnum

Back in the spring I received a call from a farmer in the Preseli mountains who had seen my work at an earlier craft fair and who had offered me some Laburnum when it was felled, the felling had been done and so we went to collect the prize. As always when anyone offers me wood, I always make...

    Drilling high speed steel

These are the big 1"+ deep industrial hacksaw blades that are under discussion here Matt, they are HSS right through (otherwise they wouldn't be much use as a turning tool) and as such are equally as hard as HSS drill bits, so while you may eventually get through one, it would be more by a...

    Pen finish - carnauba wax?

I have also found (though not on pens as such, I have not turned any) that a good finish is as much dependent on the preparation as the finish itself, for something as small as a pen I would really recommend getting some micromesh cloth or pads, for wood, (as opposed to acrylic) going down to...

As I am first to respond I will reiterate the advice we give all newcomers to the hobby, buy Keith Rowley's book Woodturning: A Foundation Course if you do not already have it, it is an invaluable resource that will help you with many questions about turning. Tools, buy high speed steel tools...

Where can get vase blanks from?

What Mick said, you need branches. Ash would be pretty good too as it is fairly stable and easy to turn green, it will warp some when drying of course, but then so will pretty much all else, so cut a hollow base or make them three legged by cutting away the rest of the foot, they will always be...

The box, the sale, the query, the blank, the commision.

Au contraire, I have insize thumbs! :D The box is 3" wide, I think that's about the average size for a turned box isn't it? Most of the boxes I see in Ray key's book and richard Raffan's books look to be around that sort of size.

The box, the sale, the query, the blank, the commision.

Sometime back, members may recall, I did a pair of boxes in Olive Ash, this one recently sold. The customer was enchanted with the timber and asked if I had any more, I had one piece left that had a little figure remaining in it. She sent me several designs but eventually settled on this...
