    Fruit bowls

What's the central insert in the beech Derek? I like the look of that bowl a lot. Oak one is nice, but the Beech is striking.

    2015 Woodturning Challenge

I agree the format for overall winner based on points can be daunting as a miss for a month or two certainly puts you down the list a bit, naturally! But the points system is still a very good means of grading, so rather than dispose of that why not have a system that is similar to teach month...

    Segmented corian pens

These all look very nice but I particularly like the resin ones, what resin do you use for that Woody?

    Spalted Elm bowl.

Spalting does soften some of the wood, after all it is a process of fungus decaying the wood to a point it becomes fungus food! But not all at once, the white areas are the ones that are usually softer, especially in advanced stages where it can degrade the wood to the point of uselessness, no...

    Ash NEB in colour.

Thanks for commenting Derek, do you mean the actual colour, or the way the colour has taken? I was aiming for something similar to the colour of the little Oak pot (below) Obviously the wood being different, a different effect is achieved. The range of darks and lights on the bowl are from...

    Spalted Ash bowl.

Ash can look really good spalted, this is a great example. Nice work Paul.

    Ash NEB in colour.

This started as a commission that got canceled, not a problem though as it was something I had in mind anyway and I think it will sell in time anyway. Finish is shellac, the bowl is 9.5 inches across. The colour is done with Chestnut's spirit stains (a mix).

A newbie's first post (and attempt!)

Your bowl looks very like Mahogany which is a fairly soft hardwood to work with anyway. You'll get the hang of finer finishing as you go along, alway useful to have some pointers etc, but ultimately, practice and experience are what will help improve your work the most. The advice to get to a...

    12" Elm bowl

Indeed, if I had made the remark to this Elm bowl you would have been correct! It is, along with the Yew bowl attached (I managed to save a pic!) a very nice bit of turning.
