At least you're having a crack at it Derek! you would think a small bowl would be the best way to start, but actually I find small items the most difficult, you very quickly run out of "canvas" and getting any kind of variation can be very tricky. Larger bowls (8" and up) make it a bit easier...

Sounds colourful Phil, but how will you A: prevent the wood from burning in the kiln and B: get a flat finish, I imagine glass, even dichroic glass, would be a bit tricky in a lathe?

While you can fill a crack with resin and have it be successful, you do need to be wary, if the crack has any form of rot, (usually this presents itself as a dark, soft material in the crack, then it might not be safe as the resin would not properly bond to the strong wood, and during turning...

The sash clamp is good for two reasons, it's thin so you only need a narrow slot to mount it, and it's heavy (although I do have a lead weight on a wire I add to the end if it needs it. Wood and bungy would work of course, but that would also make it a bit less mobile, I move it around a fair bit.

I like it, I can see it selling in a shop with no difficulty too.

Don't see why not, I've sold plenty with various holes and cracks, I just call 'em features, and added character.

It seems to be my browser, they work OK in firefox but not Opera. Nice blanks and stoppers too!
