    Help & Advice when making wood letters

    Nice piece of cutting toesy. Very neat, sharp and even. Well done, I'd be dead chuffed with that if I'd cut it. Regarding the warping, the guys are right, it's the problem with pine I'm afraid. It's grown quickly and has a tendency to warp as does most woods but pine seems to warp more than...

    Newbie to woodworking and scrolling

    Hi and welcome along to the forum. 20mm wood . . . . if it's pine (light, softwood smells like . . . pine!) you should be able to use a No 5 blade. If it's a hardwood (heavy . . . smells like wood!) you may need a No 7 blade. I would recommend the reverse tooth blades as it cuts down on the...

    Hegner scrollsaw

    I agree with Martin's book choice but would also add the following ones :- "Scroll Saw Workbook" - John A. Nelson "Big Book of Scroll Saw Woodworking" - from the Scroll Saw Woodworking & Crafts Magazine "Shop Tested Scroll Saw Techniques and Projects You Can Make" - from the editors of Wood...

    SG alien hitchhiker and teapot!

    Don't you just hate getting commissions from family on subjects you aren't keen on? I tend to say "yeah I'll see if I can fit it in" and hope they forget all about it. It rarely works :evil: Good work though Martin and I hope you rewarded yourself with a nice project . . . . a bit like a...

    How to use a stacked dado?

    I thought under EU regs that it was illegal to buy/use a stacked dado set over here. Like a lot of peeps I'm a huge Norm fan and when I was looking to buy a table saw a few years ago I wanted one that would take a stacked dado set because they look very useful. All the European saws I looked...

    New scroll saw pieces

    Despite wearing glasses for everyday use I use one of these fluorescent magnifiers for all my scroll work. They are invaluable and with the magnification you can follow the lines when cutting soooo much better. On occasions when I've deviated from the lines when cutting, I've then looked at the...

    a word of thanks

    Although I haven't contributed to your particular questions Sam, I do try to give whatever advice I can to anyone who needs it. I suspect that very few of us have done anything in woodwork since we were at school so to be able to hang out in somewhere like UK Workshop is brilliant. I haven't...

    New scroll saw pieces

    Nice to see you getting to grips with the new saw John. Fine bit of scrolling and I particularly like the second Art Deco one. Cutting parallel lines, like the 'ring' around the outside, really shows up if there is a tender to wander. Yours, however, look parallel and cut to a high standard...

    Bird nesting box plans

    Something I picked up on a while ago was how crucial the size of the hole is for attracting or dissuading certain varieties of bird. You can't just cut any size hole you like . . . unless you aren't too fussed about which birds nest in there. I also discovered that if you want to attract the...

    Toy Making Plans, Question.

    Well they take PayPal Chris so it shouldn't be a problem. If you don't have a PayPal account it's well worth it these days and is very secure. You might also want to check out http://toysandjoys.com/ I've used them a couple of times and they have some fabulous well designed plans.

    using a dremel to finish?

    Although I haven't used mine much I'm sure they are very useful. I haven't used them in scrolling but they are good for getting into tight spaces and rounding over things etc, etc

    using a dremel to finish?

    I'm sure we would all like to see some of your work John if you could post some. I'm sure I can't be the only one who likes the idea but need some encouragement to actually have a go. Seeing some of your work might kick-start a new facet of scrolling?

    Breakthrough in transferring your patterns on to wood

    It's my admin day today so like all conscientious people I spent the morning . . . . . in the workshop!! The A4 label routine worked a treat. I printed out an A4 sheet of some of my favourite hangers on to an A4 label then stacked six A4 sheets of 1.5mm ply together and only cut out one hanger...
