You could make them out of some 3/4" pine from the likes of B&Q. There must be several pull-a-long toy plans kicking around on the internet and if you decide to make more than one it might pay to make a cardboard/thin-ply template out of the various pieces so for future repeat jobs you just...

I have to say that cutting out letters/words is the most difficult thing I've ever scrolled. I've found that it doesn't really matter where I start as it's the shape of the letter which seems to dictate how I cut it out. When cutting out a shape, if you wander off the line a bit it doesn't...
