    Asbestos testing?

Skimming it is then! I've always viewed plastering as one of the dark arts - has anybody used any of the premixed lightweight skim coats, or is this something best left to a pro? Any thoughts on ballpark price to skim a 3m x 3m bathroom ceiling?

    Asbestos testing?

I've got a number of ceilings with textured coatings, not full blown swirly Artex but lightly stippled. The house was built mid '70s and I've got no contact with previous owners so can't ask them about when various work was done. Various sources tell me that textured ceiling coverings could...

    Pocket Screw Suppliers

I thought the received wisdom was to avoid drywall screws for pocket holes because the countersink acts as a wedge that can split the pocket shoulders and they can snap while driving - only repeating what I've read, I've never tried to use them for pocket holes. Washer head/pan...

    Festool sanding advice

One thing that might be worth digging into if you need 110V for site work - I understand the CEROS transformer is universal AC input 110-240V, I've only seen the DEROS in 240V - maybe that's because that's all I was interested in? As well as Axminster I've used Southernfilters.com (also in...

    Festool sanding advice

I can't comment on the CEROS, I've got a DEROS which I believe is very marginally heavier (~75g), but loses the external transformer. The DEROS is ~1kg all up, significantly less than the the Rotex or ETS sanders. This makes it perfect for one handed, or overhead use. The DEROS works fine with...

    Jigsaw scroll-saw adaptor

I've been looking for a scroll-saw for some time, I'm actually not likely to buy one for a while because I've already got a job/project list up to my eyes; I've got my eye on an Excalibur EX-21 at the moment, but we'll see. Anyway, my reason for posting is that I stumbled across this kit made...

3D rubber duck comet pic - red and green specs at the ready!

This is one of the best 3D anaglyphs I've seen Comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko in 3D the original anaglyph and more formats are available by following the link. More info on NASA's APOD site.

    digital vernier caliper

Out of curiosity I did a quick Google and they do exist - solar powered calipers! This could be a nice solution for those with battery issues - although it still uses a battery for backup. Another benefit of digital calipers (at least the ones that I've got) is if you routinely work in metric...

    digital vernier caliper

I've got a couple of those that I use for all sorts - good to a mm as you say and quite happy around water/oil/muck. The other much neglected use of the caliper is the tail as a depth gauge.

I'd like to hear about your tea drinking

Roger - that's truly awful, is there no remission/recovery? It now seems in rather poor taste for me to rhapsodise about my favourite tea - Barry's Gold Blend, morning, noon and night. BTW: Slightly odd to classify tea as a hand tool, but I guess I always have one close to hand when...

    digital vernier caliper

I've heard people level that complaint at many devices, including the Trend digital angle measurer. With the Trend there's off when you just press 'off', and there's *really* off when you press 'off' for 3 seconds or so. The first is a 'sleep' mode that keeps the device in a standby mode, the...

    who/s tools do you favour

I always prefer using other people's tools, I find they need much less work to clean/sharpen at the end of the day  In all seriousness I genuinely do like to use other people's tools just to see what I like the feel of. I'm not loyal to any particular brand and try to choose on the basis...

Steve's workshop - Painting the outside walls

Steve, thanks for continuing to post your progress 'warts and all' - it's been really interesting to watch your progress, complete with your honest self-appraisals! I take it you're producing a detailed and fully annotated workshop construction guide with all of the...

Best package for a Festool TS55R for making kitchen/storage?

I don't know where you were looking, a similar package from Nuts & Bolts (minus the 1800 rail, but plus the cleaning kit and rail bag) is £760 inc VAT - might be worth giving them a call regarding delivery. No connection with N&B other than a satisfied customer.

    Britain’s last hangman

This is absolutely not a comment by me on the rights and wrongs of capital punishment, and in view of the quite shocking outbreak of civility that has prevailed on this forum recently it would probably be prudent to avoid the direct discussion of the emotive and divisive central topic. All that...

Oh no, what have I done?

Excellent buy(s) - I hope you'll be very happy together! I've had my eye on the little Rotex for a while, but my blue Bosch Delta sander shows no sign of dying yet! I've been really impressed with my Mirka for (very nearly) dustless sanding, but I like the idea of the combined small...

    Doncaster area practical help needed

Hi Pebbles, All local authorities seem to offer different services, but mine (for the time being until the wheelie bins come into force) sells garden waste bags for £1 each that you can put out with your regular waste collection; they'll also do 'bulky household waste' collections for an...
