Painted stair risers - MDF or Hardboard?

Thanks for the replies chaps. I'm using stair nosing like those in the picture below. The existing treads overhang the riser by ~18mm, so I'm packing out the existing riser to the level of the edge of the existing tread with some chipboard to make a flush right angle (hope that makes sense) and...

Last chance to see Vulcan XH588 fly

Some nice photos there Alex and jpt - it's always breathtaking to seem them low and slow. For general OMG-how-is-that not-falling-out-of-the-sky-ness it's rivalled by the B52s I've seen around Nellis AFB outside Las Vegas - but the Vulcan wins by a country mile in terms of looks - Shagadelic...

Painted stair risers - MDF or Hardboard?

Context: I'm in the middle of laying a new floor, floating engineered wood type, throughout my hallway, stairs and landing. I don't want the solid expanse of wood up the stairs and will paint the risers white to match the existing rails, banister, skirting. I already have to hand a sheet of 3mm...

Last chance to see Vulcan XH588 fly

I hope I can make one of these dates for the last flying Vulcan. There's a page on why this will be the final flying season. XH588's Youtube channel

Now this might seem a silly question, but

I've never used one, nor even seen one, but Which magazine happened to mention recently that Fisher & Paykel machines do hot & cold supply. They sell direct from their website, but their dealers seem to be clustered in and around the M25 - so you might struggle to see one in the flesh down in...

My newly built space saving thicknesser cabinet

Good idea - I like the concept of disappearing tools in a small workshop! I opted to mount my thicknesser on a folding mitre saw stand so that I can set it up outside and use the infeed/outfeed supports for longer pieces.

    timber merchants with no saw

Absolutely - there's a whole section of the HSE website dedicated to Health & Safety myths - most of them boil down to using H&S as a convenient smokescreen.

Good wood working tool shops. NOT online ones

More of a builders merchants/power-tool outfit but Elliots have several outlets in your area. Not the strongest for hand tools but they do stock some.

    Corrosion of metals by wood

I was idly Googling to see what information I could find on using brass and stainless screws in Western Red Cedar when I came across this article on the Corrosion of Metals by Wood on the NPL website of all places, also an interesting article on the V&A website. It's all a bit over the top for...

    Dust mask recommendations

I use the 3M 6038 filters, good for solid and liquid particles.

    Dust mask recommendations

Another vote for the 3M 7500, the downward exhaust port is a great feature when you're wearing specs, and the filters are reasonably priced when you consider the alternatives (i.e. a premature death from a preventable respiratory disease)

How large a hard drive do I need ?

You can try running 'Disk cleanup', right click on your hard drive in explorer, go to properties > General > Disk cleanup This will tell you what's using a lot of your space, you can also click on the more options button and remove 'System restore points and shadow copies'. If you've never...

Visualizer rendering for Sketchup - now free

For anybody interested in rendering their Sketchup designs, the Visualizer extension/plug-in is now available free of charge. Apparently they're now focusing their efforts on a mobile product so Version 13 is their final release for desktop and they're releasing it free. I was sure I read...

    Apple tree slices

Thanks for the tips chaps, I like the idea of using the casting resin, and I agree some cracks and splits can add character - I just don't want to produce something that will end up looking like a smashed Pringle! I only wanted to take a couple of slices, Dad's particularly keen on seeing...
