Bid now for cheap stolen tools...

Joe, Sorry about the theft of your tools - there's a special place reserved in hell for those that would steal a man's way of making his living. It does seem strange that the insurance companies seem to be doing precious little to discourage the theft, and subsequent illegal disposal of stolen...

    answer me this

Setting the jigsaw's orbital/pendulum action to maximum can help to clear sawdust from the cut which in turn helps with a faster & straighter cut, the penalty can be a slightly rougher cut. Looking on the bright side - at least your wandering was on the waste side of your mark. K.

Bid now for cheap stolen tools...

As a nipper I got to keep £50 that I found in an envelope and handed into the local police. There was quite a lengthy wait period, it felt like months! I'd forgotten all about it when the local bobby dropped it off for me with a nice letter from the Chief Constable himself.

Bid now for cheap stolen tools...

I'm not quite sure how I feel about this but I suppose the recovered items have passed the 'waiting' period and the owners haven't bothered (or noticed...?) to report them as stolen. I suppose compared to the alternative of sending them to landfill/scrap it's a cost-effective way of dealing with...

    polishing shell

Agreed, but it depends on the shell. (Some?) clam's shells do have a nacreous/porcellaneous composition rather than solely porcellaneous, if well prepared you can get a beautiful iridescent/lustrous mother of pearl finish, although I'm sure some varieties are more/less suitable. I've heard of...

Sorry, another sharpening thread. I'll make it quick.

Disregard the two previous comments on using steels - they're intended for food carving knives NOT wood carving knives. Also, chefs can't sharpen for **** - fact. Hone regularly and you'll rarely need to sharpen, I use autosol on a piece of leather.

Would a properly installed blade guard have prevented this?

This is what happens when people don't follow basic rules for guarding blades

Funny, I'm seeing what looks like a shaved orang-utan in a swimming cap and the words "I <3 Art", as Bob says it's a bit fuzzy (the shaved orang-utan that is...)

Warning: this is a really moving story of one dog and his man, don't watch it you're prone to the vapours. Denali More blubber than whale fritters.

Absence from the Forum and my shop.

Sorry about your news. On the breadmaker front we've had a Panasonic for 10-12 years now, yes the blade is pretty chewed up and it's lost some coating, but the pan is fine. I'd put that down to the machine's reliability/longevity rather than a flaw in the coating - it's churned a lot of dough...

    Buffing out glass scratches

I've used Cerium oxide and a polishing pad to remove light scratching before - it worked surprisingly well, but I wouldn't want to do it for a large area, or around any obstructions. Edited to add: Like this product from 3M, but you can buy small quantities quite cheaply from Ebay

Guess the breed of the dog

Just call me Mr Memory... The original post was regarding feeding dogs bones, it was the detail of the carrier bag that etched itself indelibly into my memory! Also, when I used to deliver newspapers as a kid, one of my deliveries was to a family with a boxer - I think it ate more of the...

When did the world go mad for Festool?

Why Festool? A few thoughts in no particular order, from an 'Amateur' inasmuch as I don't work for hire, although like many I'm a serial house-buyer/renovator/seller who became thoroughly fed up with the workmanship of many 'Professionals'. I'm a Professional in a different field and frankly the...

Steve, I think I bought the drum from Solent Plastics, but you can find them on eBay pretty readily. Cheers, Kev by Doug, Thanks I'll try bagless next time. Cheers

    Workshop vac dust interceptor

I use a Dust Deputy cyclone on top of a 60 litre blue food bin with my workshop vac. Today on removing the bag I had my usual wrestling match to get the bag out of the bin, the drum shape tends to make the bag wedge in place, so I end up inverting the whole shooting match into another bag and...

    Solar window film (heat control)

Has anybody got any experience of solar window film? We've got a few rooms that become overly warm on summer afternoons when the sun bears on the back of the house. I do want to have 'reasonable' visibility of the garden from inside; I'm not concerned about privacy, the cows in the field behind...

    anyone seen my 6" rule??

I can't speak for the modern Rabone, I've had mine for years, but I've got a number of "Rabone Chesterman Made in England No64R Rustless Chrome Face" and the corresponding 300mm version - I think they're great! The 'chrome' face is a subdued matt grey finish that is clearly legible in moderate...
