It all comes at once! Grrrrr!

Sorry to hear of your trouble, you're right though "When sorrows come, they come not single spies but in battalions." never feels more accurate than when funds are tight, time is short, tempers too, and the weather's **** to boot.

@Wellywood - very good, I particularly like the re-telling with the bowler hat and flat screen TV - old meets new, but it still works!

    Mac Freezing on internet

Maybe I should have made my attempted joke clearer - Macs are perceived by the faithful as beyond fault, ergo any fault must lie externally.

Isaac Asimov used to re-frame jokes with potentially racist/ethnic slurs by using the fictional country of Ruritania, e.g. Q: Why do Ruritanian dogs have flat faces? A: From chasing parked cars... The tradition is still alive in the Dilbert comics where Scott Adams uses the country of Elbonia...

    Mac Freezing on internet

Given that it's a Mac are you sure it's not that the Internet itself may be broken? :D Okay, baiting aside, are you able to try a wired Ethernet connection? We had a problem recently where one phone was bringing the whole network to a grinding halt because of poor WiFi behaviour.

Samuel Pepys was a tool collector!

Old goat indeed, and remarkably frank in his diary entries: and feeling for a chamber-pott, there was none, I having called the mayde up out of her bed, she had forgot I suppose to put one there; so I was forced in this strange house to rise and ***** in the chimney twice; and so to bed and was...

    more spatial pornography...

The eagle eyed among you will have noted the UK 13A wall sockets on the kitchen wall. I did a Google image search, which led me to http://www.houzz.com/projects/7214/Wenge-and-White, which led me to http://www.glenvalegroup.com/, which via some more Google-Fu led me to Blum. The plate holders...

Any woodcarvers who care to share some advice and tips

I think I'll have to plead ignorance here! My only carving tools are a small set of Flexcut, I hone these in accordance with Flexcut's directions with the supplied Flexcut profiles and yellow compound. I haven't had to regrind yet, the little and often approach seems to work quite well, at least...

Any woodcarvers who care to share some advice and tips

Toby, you're welcome I hope there's something useful there for you. No I don't attend any of those meetings, that's the wrong part of Dorset for me I'm afraid, almost Hampshire indeed! Also, time pressures are against me at the moment, I'm doing well if I can carve* out a couple of hours at the...

Declining standards of dress in the workplace?

So did I twenty-seven years ago! I tend to shave by touch these days to avoid the reproachful stare of the old geezer in the mirror. (The book was published in '87)

What is the proper way to use rasps?

A little bit of heresy - I've got a carbide rasp that I bought a few years ago to tidy up some awkward tiles. It leaves a surprisingly good finish on wood if used with a light touch, can be used in any direction, and cost ~£5. It tends to clog quite easily but it's proved its value more than a...
