My bench grinding disaster - please help?

I'd recommend honing your secondary bevel on your best grinding attempt and not worrying too much about it. Your secondary bevel may be bigger than it needs to be but the next time you grind use this secondary bevel to gauge your grind. Grind keeping the secondary bevel as even as you can across...

    best oil for plywood ?

240 grit should be ok. I would apply a couple of coats of the same oil Mike mentions. Then apply some paste wax (clear) with a grey scotch pad. Then polish the wax with a lint free cloth or some good kitchen towel (I use Bounty!) Make sure you keep using a fresh area of cloth or a new piece of...

    Low Angle smoothing planes

Tony - I think the OP is asking about the Veritas BU smoother - not the LV LA smooth plane. When you say both LN and LV make one and you have both - LN only do a version of the latter LV plane. So do you have the BU smoother or the LA smooth plane. If the latter then you're probably not...

Editing video clip in windows movie maker

Tony Might be easiest to do this in Youtube itself using the annotate tool? Upload the video and then choose edit and annotate. Cheers Gidon

Quickest way to repair damaged chisel

No problem Andrew I was curious. I personally wouldn't use the XX stone for grinding out nicks - it's handy for restoring the primary bevel without plugging anything in and when I don't want a hollow grind. I also paid a lot less than Axminster's price - got it in the US when the XR was good :)...

    Planer thicknesser problem, any ideas?

Tony Are you feeding the wood in from the correct side . (Don't laugh - I actually did this once (same machine) when I hadn't used it for a long time and couldn't work out why it didn't work!! We had just had a baby and I blame nappy brain!) Cheers Gidon

Quickest way to repair damaged chisel

Andrew Sorry for late reply and prolly too late. But I tried grinding out a 1mm nick I created in a chisel on the XX DMT for you. It took 4 minutes with a honing guide. 1 further minute to hone and polish a secondary bevel. So not bad - depends on how often you're hitting nails! I use the Norton...

    Even More Shed Building Questions

Tom I would (and have!) use 2.5" screws. That brad nailer is a bit lightweight for cladding IMO - I bought a 16 gauge nailer (was in a hurry and bought the Rockworth one from B&Q which has been fine for 2 sheds so far ...!) for cladding and reckon a 15 gauge nailer would have been even better. I...

Quickest way to repair damaged chisel

Andrew If you want to stick to diamond stones - the DMT Extra Extra course (D8XX) is very good for grinding. Not as fast as a grinder of course but easier to use on site I'd imagine. It is specified as as 120 grit but it cuts a lot quicker than the black 220 grit DMT (I have both). A cheaper...

    Block Plane - Advice needed

Mmm - I don't have that problem either - got mine about 4 years ago. The lever cap is counter-sinked though where the screw holds it to the plane body. Cheers Gidon

    Spraying & Masks??

Actually finding the right mask or more correctly filter for spraying is a nightmare in my experience! No the Trend one won't do - I bought a Sundstrom half face mask from Arco (you may have branch near you). Or I believe Halfords do spraying masks. To get the correct filter you need to know...

    Anybody used/use rexon tools?

A long time ago Andy King did a review of SCMS's for GWW and IIRC that Rexon came out best. I can try and dig out the review if you're interested. Cheers Gidon

First WIP post - New workshed

You need to select the size you want from the drop down box on the right. You can also manually reszie them by changing the value after the s (currently s144). Here is one changed to s640 :). Cheers Gidon

Advice on AEG cordless kit deal

Neil Yes my Dewalt is NiCd - they were lasting a good day say with a lot of use but less now. I think charging them in a very cold shed is not ideal! Cheers Gidon

Advice on AEG cordless kit deal

Neil In fact the more I look at it are you sure you read it right - it wasn't a choice of two or something!? Does look an amazing price if correct. Cheers Gidon

Advice on AEG cordless kit deal

Neil Looks a very good price to me but haven't owned AEG kit. I paid more for a Dewalt 14.4V Drill / Trim Saw a few years ago (and that was on offer)! Sabre saw handy for destruction and gardening! Cheers Gidon

WTF! Nail Gun fires a brad across the workshop...

matt Funnily enough I've had the exact same thing happen with the exact same nailer! I try not to have any of my nailers loaded with nails when I connect them up - especially that one (think I've used it about twice ever). Cheers Gidon
