    It's a girl!

My wife gave birth to our 4th child - a baby girl who remains nameless! Didn't make it to hospital and was minutes away from having to deliver it myself!! Her 3 older brothers are very chuffed - as are we! Cheers Gidon

    First (and last) sharpening system

Rob Ashamedly I also have that ceramic stone  - but think you're right both stones are overkill for a starting out kit (in fact both stones are overkill false stop!!) Vikesh - if cost is really not so important and you want to also sharpen your knives I'd probably go with a Tormek - the...

    First (and last) sharpening system

Rob - just a comment on the 8000 grit DMT. I wouldn't really call it a polishing stone (I wish it was). It's pretty tricky to completely remove the burr with this stone since it still cuts very fast. But it does refine the scratch pattern significantly and a quick strop is all you'll need...

Need a good beginners book on carpentry/woodwork

Another vote for the Collins book - my first book and still refer to it occasionally. Very clear and covers most aspects of woodworking for a beginner. Cheers Gidon

    Passport Photos

They are really fussy about the background colour. And it's not just on home printed photos - even professional ones can be rejected! My first attempt - the post office said wouldn't be accepted and so I did them again - they still said they might not be accepted but they were :). Just make sure...

Piston fit blanket chest lid stay?

Andy - yes it is designed for overhead cupboards - may be the problem. But still expected it to soft close. Thanks for the link. Dick, Fecn - not exactly sure wha you mean - but will experiment with position this weekend. (Although a little reluctant to be drilling more holes in the oak!) Are...

Piston fit blanket chest lid stay?

Hi I bought this lid stay from Screwfix and despite the awful instructions managed to install it to an blanket chest I made some time ago. The lid opens nicely but I was expecting it to close softly too but it doesn't - it's the opposite - it sort of pulls it shut. The instructions are hard to...

    Shed / Workshop Roofing!

I'd also recommend felt shingles - I've used them on both a playhouse and a storage shed. Have a look at my web link for examples. They are quite easy to lay and should last well - think the Marley ones from B&Q have 25 yr guarantee! As mailee said they use them in N America on houses! Cheers Gidon

    Storage Shed - WIP **FINISHED!**

Well almost finished - have quite a few finishing touches to make, particularly inside but here it is: (Click here for all WIP photos). Very satisfying project and I have learnt a lot. Final costs: Floor joists, floor boards: £100 (B&Q) Wall and roof framing timber: £100 (with a fair bit...

    Plane sharpening advive for beginner.

Dave If you have nothing else try some wet and dry paper as has been suggested. Stick it to glass or some thick flat MDF. Buy a cheap honing guide. Grind a primary bevel on some coarse paper (25 degree'ish) and then hone a secondary bevel at 30 degrees on some finer paper (try 600 grit). Make...

    Router Table Ideas

Andy Sorry no step by steps. Personally I'd not bother with an insert and spend the money on an Xtreme Xtension and attach the router directly to the table. Much easier plus the quick change feature on the XX makes using the table a breeze. Here's my table: two sheets of MDF, laminated with a...
